"It is customers’ right": Declares Ujjain Mayor Mukesh Tatwal, mandating all shops display owners' names and phone numbers prominently, inspired by similar directives from the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments for the Kanwar Yatra route
On Sunday, 21st July, Ujjain Municipal Corporation’s Mayor Mukesh Tatwal issued a directive that has caught the attention of many. He ordered shopkeepers to clearly display the name and phone number of the shop owner outside their establishments. This directive follows similar orders issued by the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand for shops along the Kanwar Yatra route.
This new rule is quite straightforward. If a shop owner fails to comply with the order, they will face a fine. The first violation will cost them Rs 2,000, and a second violation will lead to a Rs 5,000 fine. This clear and firm stance by the Mayor is intended to ensure compliance without ambiguity.
Mayor Tatwal emphasized, “The purpose of the order is not to target Muslim shopkeepers but to ensure security and transparency.” His statement aims to clarify that the order is purely for administrative and security purposes, not to single out any community.
The timing of this directive is also notable. The holy month of Sawan begins on 22nd July 2024, a period when Ujjain, known as the holy city of Mahakal, sees an influx of devotees from around the world. These devotees come to offer prayers at the renowned Mahakal Temple. Given the massive crowd that gathers in Ujjain during this time, the directive aims to bolster security and facilitate better management.
Adding to the significance of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh’s chief minister, Mohan Yadav, hails from this very city. His connection to Ujjain underscores the importance of maintaining order and transparency, especially during such a crucial period.
Notably, the mayor-in-council had earlier approved a proposal that allowed shopkeepers to display their names in their shops. This proposal was then sent to the state government for objections and formalities. Mayor Tatwal explained, “All the formalities have already been completed. The implementation was delayed as the nameplates initially had to be of the same size and colour. Now, we have relaxed these conditions. Displaying the names and mobile numbers of shopkeepers will now be sufficient.” This change simplifies the process, making it easier for shopkeepers to comply.
Mayor Tatwal emphasized that this directive is crucial for enhancing customer safety. He pointed out that this requirement is also part of the MP Shop Establishment Act and Gumasta License. He said, “Ujjain is a religious and holy city. People come here with religious faith. They have the right to know about the shopkeeper from whom they are buying goods. If a customer is dissatisfied or has been cheated, then knowing about the shopkeeper can solve his problem.” This statement underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in ensuring a positive experience for the city's visitors.
Interestingly, shopkeepers in Bodh Gaya have already begun putting up display boards with their names, given the pilgrimage that devotees undertake to the Mahabodhi Temple during the month of Sawan. This proactive approach by shopkeepers in another holy city highlights the widespread recognition of the benefits of such transparency measures.
In summary, the implementation of this directive in Ujjain is not just about following orders but about creating a safer and more transparent environment for all. By knowing the shopkeeper's name and contact information, customers can feel more secure and confident in their transactions. This measure aims to protect both the devotees who flock to Ujjain during the holy month of Sawan and the city's reputation as a welcoming and orderly destination.
UP and Uttarakhand governments issue orders to show the names of shopkeepers
It all started with the orders by the Muzaffarnagar administration directing shopkeepers and cart owners to prominently display the names of the owners and workers. The aim was to avoid any dispute during the Kanwar Yatra. This decision sparked objections from left-liberals and Islamists, who called the orders discriminatory.
Amidst the controversy, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, intervened. He issued orders mandating that the names of shopkeepers and cart owners be displayed prominently across Kanwar Yatra Marg. This move was aimed at ensuring clarity and reducing potential conflicts during the yatra.
Taking inspiration from Uttar Pradesh, the Uttarakhand government also issued similar orders. This step was seen as a way to maintain harmony and avoid any misunderstandings during the religious event. By having the names of shopkeepers and cart owners visible, both governments aimed to create a safer and more transparent environment for the pilgrims participating in the Kanwar Yatra.
This trend of transparency and accountability is spreading, reflecting a growing recognition of its benefits in maintaining public order and trust. As these measures take effect, they highlight a shared commitment to security and fairness during significant religious gatherings.
