‘Saifuddin raped in Bahrain, forcibly converted, got baby aborted’: Hindu woman says she was sexually assaulted before a Congress leader. Details

At the onset of July this year, a grave and unsettling incident surfaced when a report by Satyaagrah revealed that a Hindu woman lodged a formal complaint against her Muslim spouse in Lucknow. This distressing case implicated not only the husband but also six additional individuals, with names including Monika, Tabassum Saeed, Najam, Fahim, and Ashifuddin, plus a number of unidentified persons. The central figure in this case, Mohammed Saifuddin, is a native of Bidar, Karnataka, whereas the plaintiff, referred to here as Ankita Sharma (a pseudonym to protect her identity), comes from Baharaich district, Uttar Pradesh, and is currently residing in Lucknow.

Ankita's ordeal paints a chilling narrative of deceit and coercion, underpinned by accusations of a complex 'love jihad' conspiracy. The involvement of Alimuddin, a leader from the Karnataka Congress, was also highlighted by her, suggesting his participation in this intricate web of manipulation and betrayal. The charges laid out by Ankita are severe, encompassing forced religious conversion, sustained sexual assault, and intense psychological and physical torment.

In a particularly harrowing account, Ankita disclosed that after being forcibly converted to Islam, she was raped by Saifuddin and coerced into marriage. The series of violations continued, culminating in a deceitful procedure to abort her five-month-old fetus at a clinic in Mumbai. This act was not only a grievous breach of her bodily autonomy but also a reflection of the stark vulnerabilities she faced.

Furthermore, allegations extended to Saifuddin's previous fiancee and his family members, who have been accused of harassing Ankita for dowry. These accusations also include pressures exerted on her to abandon her Hindu faith in favor of Islam, among other criminal offenses.

In a detailed complaint filed at Gudamba Police Station in Lucknow, Ankita Sharma revealed distressing details of her relationship with Mohammed Saifuddin, which began while both were working in Bahrain. She recounted a traumatic episode stating, “One day, he raped me in Bahrain, and I lodged a rape complaint there.” During the investigation of this complaint, Saifuddin and his family members exerted pressure on her to retract her statement after she disclosed she was five months pregnant due to the assault. They further coerced her into converting to Islam. She painfully added, "Later, on February 13, 2024, I was married to Saifuddin according to Muslim law." Following the marriage, Saifuddin orchestrated a trip to Mumbai under the pretense of obtaining medical advice, where Ankita was admitted to a hospital and her five-month-old fetus was clandestinely aborted.

This alarming series of events led the local authorities to take action. NK Srivastava, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Gudamba, confirmed that a case had been registered for dowry-related harassment against Saifuddin—who remains elusive—and his accomplices, including his four brothers and a woman named Monika. They face charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, specifically 498A (dowry harassment), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and 313 (causing miscarriage without woman's consent).

Further revelations about Saifuddin's manipulative tactics emerged as Ankita described their initial encounter. She said that Saifuddin first approached her as a client in Bahrain, where she had been working for approximately seven years, including a stint in Dubai. Their relationship commenced shortly after meeting, evolving quickly from professional to personal under dubious circumstances. Saifuddin, who often consumed alcohol laced with medications, expressed significant frustration with his family, which he used to gain Ankita's sympathy. Under the guise of seeking solace for his alleged personal troubles, he managed to convince her to marry him. In a particularly sinister revelation, Ankita disclosed that Saifuddin once drugged her, assaulted her while she was unconscious, and filmed the act to use as leverage for blackmail.

Saifuddin sold Indian girls in Gulf countries who ended up doing ‘Mujra’ in bars, says victim

In an interview with ABP News, a Hindu woman victim detailed the nefarious activities of Mohammed Saifuddin, alleging that he operates within a disturbingly deceptive framework. She claimed, “Saifuddin’s profession is to trap girls in his net by emotionally blackmailing them.” According to her, Saifuddin specifically targets young women from major Indian states such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Gujarat. She detailed how Saifuddin presents himself under the guise of providing legitimate employment opportunities, luring his victims with promises of jobs in beauty parlors and other attractive facilities.

The victim further clarified the nature of her association with Saifuddin, stressing that it was marred by manipulation rather than mutual consent. She revealed a significant cultural conflict, explaining, "The victim who is a Brahmin said that since she refused his marriage proposal saying that in her family inter-caste or inter-religion marriage is not allowed, the accused took it as a challenge." This refusal seemed to have spurred Saifuddin into further deceptive practices as a way to overcome her resistance.

The complexities of Saifuddin’s operations were further elaborated by the victim, who accused not only individuals from her community but also from others, including those she described as “Muslims and ‘fake Hindus’ from Kerala, Karnataka, and Hyderabad.” According to her, these individuals have been complicit in misleading the authorities in Bahrain. She said, "They run restaurants where girls are made to do ‘mujra’." The victim also recounted a close personal encounter with this grim reality when she was nearly coerced into participating in such performances. Her awareness arose when she was asked by Saifuddin to assist with visa processes. Upon scrutinizing the details, she discovered the dark truth that many of these girls, under the pretense of employment, were actually engaged in performing in restaurants or bars.

Victim reached the police station in Lucknow and accused the police of inaction

In a distressing sequence of events, the victim made her grievances public by recording a video at the Gudamba Thana in Lucknow this May, accusing the local police of procrastination and negligence in handling her case. The video captured her profound frustration as she confronted the police officers, voicing her disappointment over their alleged failure to conduct a timely medical examination. She revealed in the footage, "An officer Zafar Abbas told her to come for a medical examination, today, the next day, and the next to the next day." This statement underscores her ordeal in seeking prompt and efficient action from the authorities in the aftermath of her complaint.

Moreover, she expressed her astonishment and dissatisfaction with the police's earlier statements, contradicting their claims about the absence of the Investigative Officer (IO) assigned to her case. She pointed her mobile camera towards a female officer during the confrontation and stated, “This Savitri Singh madam…she is my IO…madam many big hospitals are involved in this case…you should think about it.” This interaction suggests a lack of coordination and transparency within the police department, further complicating her pursuit of justice.

The video also captured police personnel in the act of requesting her to stop recording, highlighting a possible discomfort or reluctance on their part to have their actions (or the lack thereof) documented.

In a separate video clip, which the victim recorded while seated in a police officer's cabin, further allegations surfaced regarding the police's conduct. She claimed that the Gudamba Police were exerting pressure on her to omit the religious conversion allegations from her complaint. She specifically named an officer, Nagina, and recounted being told to either abandon the religious conversion component of her FIR or face the potential rejection of her FIR altogether. This interaction indicates a troubling attempt by some elements within the police to manipulate or unduly influence the legal processes concerning her case.

‘Accused sexually assaulted, humiliated, a Congress leader was involved too’

In a harrowing complaint letter, the victim detailed a series of grave abuses that she endured at Saifuddin’s residence in Bidar, Karnataka, culminating in an egregious assault in the presence of a Congress leader. She painfully recounted, “A Congress leader pulled my Jeans and his brother inserted his toe of feet inside my vagina,” highlighting the extreme nature of the humiliation and assault she faced. This statement alone reflects a deeply disturbing abuse of power and physical violation, occurring under circumstances that should have offered her safety rather than subjecting her to such barbarity.

Further compounding the horror, she alleged that during these assaults, Saifuddin’s brother was recording the ordeal. Amidst this chaos, another brother physically assaulted her. She continued, sharing that more family members of Saifuddin, including other brothers, joined in, and with Congress leader Mohammad Alimuddin present, one chillingly said to her, ‘Hold her, we will show you [the victim] how rape happens.’ This explicit threat of gang rape in the context of her attempts to resist highlights a brutal display of power and intimidation. When she screamed for help, she was struck and forcibly confined to a room, further demonstrating the severity of her plight.

In a desperate attempt to escape, she was further humiliated when one of the brothers grabbed her chest and commanded her to leave without her t-shirt, stripping her not only of her dignity but also her basic human decency.

The victim also expressed a broader socio-cultural targeting, stating she was specifically victimized due to her identity as a Hindu Brahmin girl from Uttar Pradesh. This dimension of her ordeal suggests a complex interplay of religious and regional prejudice compounding her vulnerability. Moreover, her courage in sharing her story on social media led to a solidarity movement, as several other women came forward to disclose their similarly traumatic experiences, revealing a pattern that might have otherwise remained obscured.
