The concerning incident saw the said passenger, clutching a backpack, making an audacious threat, exclaiming, “I’ll blow up the plane!” The man introduced himself saying, “I go by the name Mohammed, servant of Allah,” and tried to make an airline official echo his sentiments. He persistently asked, “Do you also serve Allah? Do you? Speak up! Do you acknowledge yourself as Allah’s servant?”
Quick thinking by the crew led to an immediate inspection of the suspicious backpack, putting to rest any fears as no explosive materials were found inside.

Immediate Impact on Sydney's Flight Operations due to the Disturbance
Owing to the unforeseen disruption caused by the belligerent passenger aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH122 en route to Kuala Lumpur, several other flights at Sydney Airport faced interruptions. Specifically, as many as 30 domestic flights faced cancellations, causing a ripple effect of extensive delays throughout Monday afternoon.
Following its departure at 1:40 pm from Sydney Airport, the troubled flight made its return, safely touching down at 3:47 pm. Once on the ground, the plane was stationed for a considerable duration with emergency support vehicles standing by, ensuring everything remained under control.
Videos recorded by passengers showcased the man with the backpack vocally threatening those around him. Subsequently, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed the apprehension of the man in question, a 45-year-old, and disclosed plans to press charges against him later that day.

Statements from the Authorities and Passengers Aboard
The AFP, always reticent about sharing operational details, confirmed that a well-coordinated emergency plan was swiftly executed, and an evacuation procedure was carried out as soon as it was safe for all.
Reiterating their commitment to safety, the Malaysia Airlines spokesperson commented on the incident: "Our flight captain made a timely decision to turn back to Sydney, prioritizing safety above all."
Confirming the number of individuals onboard, they said, "The plane had 194 passengers and a crew of five, all of whom were safely evacuated by 3:47 pm local time. At Malaysia Airlines, passenger and crew well-being remains our topmost priority."
Sydney Airport's administration noted the cascading effect the incident had on their daily operations, resulting in 32 domestic flight cancellations and several more flights being delayed by around 90 minutes.
The AFP, while confirming their intervention, stated, “We are actively handling the situation at Sydney International Airport, further updates will follow."
As the situation gradually settled, a passenger from the flight later tweeted, “#MH122 all passengers have been safely evacuated and are now in a lounge. Authorities will take individual statements before deciding the next steps."
