"जाको राखे दीदी": CBI takes charge of the Kolkata rape case amid allegations of hospital evidence tampering, with BJP accusing officials of destroying the crime scene under the guise of renovation; the victim's family was misled about her tragic murder
In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assumed control of the investigation into a grave incident involving the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. The takeover occurred on Wednesday, 14th August, precisely a day after the Calcutta High Court mandated a CBI inquiry. This directive from the court came following a plea concerning the mishandling of the case by local authorities, necessitating the re-registration of the FIR originally filed by the Kolkata Police.

The Calcutta High Court's order was clear and urgent, demanding the local police to transfer all pertinent documents associated with the case to the CBI no later than 10 am on the specified Wednesday. The court's intervention didn't stop there; it also addressed the ongoing doctors' strike, which had arisen in response to the tragic event. The judges appealed to the medical community's sense of duty, reminding them of their "pious obligation" to return to work and cease their protest.
Upon receiving the court’s instructions, a team comprising CBI officials, alongside forensic scientists and medical experts, promptly arrived in Kolkata from Delhi. Their primary tasks included a thorough review of the autopsy report and the videography analysis of the post-mortem, which are critical in piecing together the sequence of events leading to the doctor’s death. Plans were also in place for these officials to inspect the actual location where the doctor's body was discovered, which might provide further insights into the circumstances of the crime.
The crime scene itself, a seminar hall within the hospital, presented a disturbing tableau. The young doctor was found deceased early on a Friday morning, her body marked by disarray in her attire and visible injuries. This grisly discovery raised immediate concerns about the integrity of the crime scene management by the hospital authorities. The Calcutta High Court took a stern view of this, highlighting "severe flaws" in the hospital's handling of the situation. The victim's parents had pressed for an independent probe, fearing the possibility of evidence tampering, a concern that the court found credible and acted upon.

Amid these proceedings, the court also delivered a sharp rebuke to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the state-run college where the incident occurred. His actions—or the lack thereof—post-event were criticized as lacking initiative and responsibility. It was particularly troubling to the court that Dr. Ghosh secured a similar position at another institution shortly after his resignation from the college. In response, the court ordered that he be relieved from his new role immediately and placed on leave, as a measure to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation and maintain public trust in the proceedings.
Dr. Ghosh, amid widespread scrutiny and backlash on social media following the tragic rape and murder of a female doctor, announced his resignation from his position. His departure, however, was met with swift and controversial developments as he was appointed as the Principal of Calcutta National Medical College just hours after his resignation announcement. This rapid transition sparked intense protests and debates among the medical community, who were baffled by the decision to reposition him amidst such serious allegations and public uproar.
The judiciary, too, voiced stern criticism regarding the state's decision to assign Dr. Ghosh a similar role in another institution. The court expressed significant concern over the lack of consideration given to the context and timing of his resignation. It emphatically stated, "The appropriate authority should have borne in mind the circumstances under which the resignation was given." The court argued that, at the very least, Dr. Ghosh should have been relieved of all administrative duties instead of being handed another high-responsibility role. "This professor has been made Principal of another medical college. It is not clear what was the urgency in doing so," the court remarked, questioning the rationale behind such a swift reappointment.

The court also addressed the handling of Dr. Ghosh's role post-resignation, pointing out a gap in administrative judgment. "We don’t doubt his professional skills but once he is appointed principal, he is an administrator. You should have recorded his statement, why protect him? There is something amiss," the court declared, suggesting a potential oversight or deliberate omission in the investigation process. Moreover, the court noted a perceived disconnect between the hospital administration and the victim's family, indicating a lack of support and empathy from the institution supposed to be a caretaker in times of crisis.
Compounding the family’s grief and confusion, they were initially misled about the circumstances of their daughter's death. The father of the victim recounted a disturbing phone call from the Assistant Superintendent of Chest Medicine Department, who prematurely and inaccurately informed him that his daughter had committed suicide. "Your daughter has committed suicide," were the words delivered to him, only for the family to discover the grim reality upon their arrival at the hospital. This misleading information only added to the family's trauma and fueled further dissatisfaction and mistrust towards the medical institution's handling of the incident.
It has emerged that there are significant suspicions surrounding the actions of the college administration in the wake of the tragic events at RG Kar Medical College. Accusations have been made suggesting that the administration attempted to disguise the true nature of the crime by prematurely labeling it as a suicide. This claim has led to serious implications, resulting in the Assistant Superintendent and the Head of the Department of the Chest Medicine Wing being summoned for an inquiry. The primary question they face is why the family of the deceased was misinformed about the cause of her death.
Further complicating matters, a family member of the victim relayed to the media a distressing account of their experience at the hospital. According to her, the hospital staff initially barred them from seeing the victim's body. It was not until after 2 pm that the family was finally granted access, a delay that has raised numerous questions about the hospital's handling of the situation. This has led to allegations from the victim's family suggesting the possibility of involvement by someone within the Chest Medicine Department in the crime, intensifying the scrutiny on the hospital's actions and the integrity of its staff.

Amidst these troubling allegations, another controversy has surfaced regarding the physical alterations made to the crime scene. It has been reported that significant structural changes were undertaken within the Chest Medicine Department, where the heinous act was committed. Walls within the department were demolished under the guise of 'renovation,' an act that has sparked outrage and suspicion. This alteration of the crime scene has been publicized by BJP’s Amit Malviya, who took to the social media platform X to share a video showcasing the demolition. Malviya has accused the state authorities of attempting to tamper with the evidence by altering the physical layout of the crime scene, a claim that if true, could severely undermine the integrity of the investigation.
According to allegations by prominent political figures, the handling of the crime scene by the college authorities has been nothing short of controversial. It is reported that significant structural alterations were made inside the Chest Medicine Department, specifically in areas crucial to the investigation such as the Resident Doctor’s Area and the Female Toilet. These areas were reportedly demolished under the pretext of 'renovation,' raising severe doubts about the intentions behind such drastic actions.
These allegations have pointed directly at West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of being complicit in what has been described as a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence. The accuser suggests that this act of demolishing parts of the crime scene was orchestrated to protect individuals closely connected to influential leaders within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), thus potentially obstructing the course of justice. “While West Bengal is seething with anger, given Mamata Banerjee’s apathy and Kolkata Police’s botched cover-up attempt, RG Kar Medical College authorities break down room walls, inside the Chest Medicine Dept, where the on-duty junior doctor was subjected to brutal rape and murder, destroying what could be crucial circumstantial evidence, which could have led the CBI investigating team to the murderers. The area marked as Resident Doctor’s Area and Toilet (Female) inside the Chest Medicine Dept is also being broken down in the name of renovation. This leaves no one in doubt that Mamata Banerjee was all along eliminating evidence and covering the crime trail to protect those involved in the heinous crime, who, it is speculated, happen to be family members of influential TMC leaders,” the accusation detailed.

Amid these serious allegations, the safety of women in West Bengal has been called into question, with critics arguing that no woman would ever be safe under the current governance. This sentiment has been echoed by political opponents, including the BJP, which had previously insisted on a probe by a central agency, fearing that the local police might tamper with the evidence. Their concerns seem validated as reports emerge of the hospital administration undertaking actions that could potentially compromise the investigation.
The death of the 31-year-old postgraduate student not only triggered a massive outcry within the medical community in West Bengal but also sparked protests among doctors throughout various states in India, highlighting the national impact of the incident. The National Human Rights Commission has taken note of the case, underscoring its severity and the imperative need for a thorough and transparent investigation. With further investigations ongoing, the community and observers nationwide await answers, hoping for justice and a resolution that upholds the integrity of the law and the safety of its citizens.
