"निर्भया again in West Bengal": Just as the unresolved murder of Dr. Moumita Debnath haunts Kolkata; the discovery of Priyanka Hansda's beheaded body in Shaktigarh ignites fury, prompting a CBI investigation and challenging the CM's stance on women safety
|
The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Priyanka Hansda. Despite initial reports mistakenly citing her age as 25, accurate details confirm she was 22 at the time of her tragic demise. The circumstances surrounding her death are deeply concerning, prompting local law enforcement to launch a thorough investigation. The police have officially registered this case as an unnatural death, indicating that the circumstances leading to her death were suspicious and warrant a full forensic inquiry.
Further steps have been taken to send her body for post-mortem examination. This crucial procedure will help determine the exact cause of death and gather more evidence that could lead to the apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous act.
According to the family, Priyanka was employed at a shopping mall in Bengaluru and had returned to her hometown for a vacation on August 12. Their hopes for a joyful reunion were shattered when the grim reality of her disappearance and subsequent death came to light.
The family recounted the last moments they saw Priyanka. She left her home late on Wednesday evening, deeply engaged in a conversation on her mobile phone. That was the last time they saw her alive; from that moment, she was missing until her body was discovered in a secluded area, shockingly close—within a kilometer—of her residence. The site where her body was found, marked by violence, suggests that she met a horrific end.
In response to this tragic event, district police have launched an extensive investigation, focusing particularly on identifying the person she was speaking with before her disappearance. This line of inquiry is critical, as it could potentially lead to the person or persons responsible for her death.
Her family, devastated by the loss, has been vocal with the media, asserting firmly that Priyanka's death was a murder. They strongly believe the call she received led her to step out of her home, ultimately leading to the tragic circumstances of her death. The precise nature of this call and the identity of the caller are now central to the police's investigation, as they piece together the events that led to this unspeakable crime.

The family's ordeal intensified when, after an unnerving silence, they attempted to reach her through her mobile phone, which went unanswered. This lack of response heightened their fears and eventually culminated in the grim discovery of her body.
District police, delving into the details of the case, shared that Priyanka left her home after receiving a call from a known acquaintance, based on the statements they have gathered. This detail suggests a possible trust and familiarity between Priyanka and the caller, which may have played a significant role in the events leading to her tragic departure from home.
The incident, which occurred in Nadur Jhapanatala Adivasi Para, a locality within Shaktigarh, has sparked outrage and a critical examination of the prevailing law and order situation in West Bengal. The community and the media are now posing pressing questions about the actions of the state's leadership. There is a growing clamor for the Chief Minister to address this incident not just with words but with substantial actions such as staging a protest or perhaps calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry to ensure thorough and unbiased investigations into this and similar cases of lawlessness.
As Priyanka Hansda's case unfolds, it coincides with another disturbing incident in the state—a brutal murder of a junior doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, which occurred on the same day Priyanka returned home, August 12. This heinous act has already led to significant public outcry and demonstrations, highlighting a wave of unrest over the escalating violence in the region. In response to the murder of the doctor, Kolkata Police have moved swiftly, resulting in the arrest of one individual implicated in the crime.

Amidst these protests and growing dissatisfaction with local law enforcement's handling of such serious cases, the Kolkata High Court has stepped in, ordering the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the inquiry. This decision underscores the severity and complex nature of the case, reflecting the public's demand for transparency and justice.
Amit Malviya, In-charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Department and Co-incharge for West Bengal, recently expressed his grave concerns regarding the safety of women in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. Taking to the X platform, Malviya highlighted a series of horrifying incidents, pointing to a deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
"This is how safe women are in West Bengal, under Mamata Banerjee," Malviya wrote, drawing attention to a string of violent crimes against women that have shocked the state in recent days.
He began by referencing the "rape and murder of a woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital on 09/08/2024." This shocking crime has raised serious concerns about the safety of women, even in supposedly secure environments like hospitals.
Malviya then highlighted another disturbing case: "A specially abled girl is gang raped in Shaktigarh on 12/08/2024." This incident has sparked outrage, as it targeted one of society's most vulnerable individuals.
The post further mentioned the "body of a Janjatiya girl is found in Jhapantala with her throat slit, on 14/08/2024." The brutality of this crime has left the community in shock and questioning the ability of the state to protect its people.
In a chilling conclusion to the series of events, Malviya added, "Yesterday morning, another dead body of a woman, packed in a sack, was recovered from a canal in Madhyamgram, which falls in the greater Kolkata region." This latest discovery has only deepened the fear and insecurity among the residents of West Bengal.
Malviya’s post ended with a powerful call to action: "Do we want a West Bengal, which is so unsafe for women? Mamata Banerjee must resign."
The involvement of the CBI is a critical development and is seen by many as a step towards ensuring a more thorough and impartial investigation, which is hoped to bring about a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding these tragic events. As the community grapples with these successive shocks, the judicial system's role becomes ever more pivotal in addressing the broader issues of safety and justice in West Bengal.
This series of violent acts has not only cast a shadow over the state's law and order situation but has also intensified the debate around the effectiveness of the local police force. The community's expectation now is for conclusive investigations and firm actions that will restore safety and order, preventing further tragedies and affirming the rule of law.
