On the evening of Saturday, 13th April, at approximately 4:45 pm, a distressing event unfolded in Patiala city, Punjab. Vikas Bagga, also widely known as Vikas Prabhakar, fell victim to a brutal attack while at his confectionery shop on Railway Road. Mr. Prabhakar, who had been living on Railway Road and had taken on the role of president of the Vishva Hindu Parishad in Nangal just three months earlier, was found in a dire state, bleeding profusely.
Eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage from the scene reveal a chilling sequence of events. Two men approached Mr. Prabhakar’s shop: one concealed his identity with a helmet, and the other covered his face with a cloth. At around 4:47 pm, the helmeted man entered the shop. He exited shortly after, within just one minute, leaving behind a horrifying scene. Mr. Prabhakar was discovered lying in a pool of blood, gravely injured.
In an urgent response, he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the swift efforts to save him, he was tragically declared dead upon arrival. The police have since launched an investigation to track down the two unidentified men responsible for this heinous crime. The murder of Vikas Prabhakar has not only left a community in mourning but also intensified the fear and unrest among the residents of Nangal.
Attack on the Head
In a gruesome detail that has further shocked the community, it was determined that Vikas Prabhakar was struck on the back of his head with a sharp weapon. This violent strike was so forceful that it caused the fat and flesh from the inside of his head to fall onto his shop floor, marking a horrifying scene of the attack. The neighboring shop owner, upon witnessing this distressing sight, acted swiftly to rush Mr. Prabhakar to the Civil Hospital Nangal. Despite these efforts, Mr. Prabhakar was in critical condition and sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival. The individuals responsible for this brutal act have not yet been identified, leaving the community on edge. The fear instilled by this daylight murder on Railway Road continues to loom over the area, affecting everyone's sense of security.

Police Examine CCTV Footage
In response to this tragic incident, the local police were quick to initiate an investigation. However, despite reviewing evidence and conducting inquiries, no significant leads have surfaced yet. Early in the investigation, CCTV footage captured two young men arriving at the scene on a black Jupiter bike. These individuals were seen leaving shortly after their arrival. Not long after they departed, auto mechanic Manish Kumar entered Mr. Prabhakar's shop with the intention of purchasing items, only to find him in a dire state, lying in a pool of blood.
Further complicating the investigation is the fact that the assailants were using a scooter that did not have a number plate, making their identification challenging. The exact type of weapon used in this cold-blooded murder has yet to be determined, adding another layer of difficulty to the ongoing police investigation. The community remains anxious as the perpetrators are still at large, with the police striving to piece together the available evidence in hopes of bringing justice to Vikas Prabhakar and his family.
Political Response and Police Investigation
The brutal murder of Vikas Prabhakar has not only shocked the local community but has also drawn reactions from political figures. BJP politician Dr. Parminder Singh publicly condemned the killing and criticized the AAP government in Punjab for its inability to maintain law and order in the state. This accusation highlights the political tension and the growing concern over safety issues under the current administration.
In response to the incident and the subsequent outcry, Ropar SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana addressed the media. He confirmed that an investigation into the murder had been initiated. SSP Khurana mentioned that the precise nature of the murder weapon would be determined only after the postmortem results were available, which would help clarify the specifics of the attack.
Further complicating the case, SSP Khurana revealed that empty cartridges had been found at the scene of the crime, indicating that a firearm had been used. Meanwhile, SHO Nangal Rajneesh Chaudhary gave a statement to The Times of India, providing more details about the circumstances of the attack. According to SHO Chaudhary, "The assailants wearing helmets and masks, fled the scene after fatally shooting Vikas Prabhakar." This statement confirms that the murder involved shooting, which aligns with the discovery of the cartridges.
The police are continuing their efforts to resolve this case, utilizing CCTV footage to help identify the assailants. In pursuit of justice, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, marking the official start of the legal process. The FIR cites murder and common intention, laying the groundwork for a thorough investigation to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for this heinous crime. The community, while shaken, looks to the authorities to restore peace and order and ensure such tragic incidents do not recur.

The CCTV footage from the scene has been thoroughly reviewed, leading to an escalated investigation. Nangal Police Station in-charge, Rajneesh Chaudhary, together with Ajay Singh, the additional DSP of Sri Anandpur Sahib and Nangal, personally visited the crime scene to oversee the progress. Their goal is clear: to track down and apprehend the attackers responsible for this violent act.
Dr. Pratyaksh from Civil Hospital provided crucial information about the victim's condition upon arrival. He confirmed that when Vikas Prabhakar was brought into the emergency room, he had already succumbed to his injuries, and despite the medical team's significant efforts, they were unable to revive him. This detail underscores the severity of the attack and the immediate fatal consequences it had.
VHP President Appointment Just Three Months Ago
Vikas Prabhakar, the victim of the recent attack on Railway Road, was known for his religious dedication and had been actively involved in community service. His commitment led to his appointment as president of the Vishva Hindu Parishad in Nangal just three months prior to his death. Vikas, a father of two daughters, was respected and loved in his community, and his untimely death has left a deep void on Railway Road.
The continuous criminal activities in the area have alarmed the residents, who are now calling for increased police vigilance. The local community believes it is crucial for the police to enhance their presence and ensure that CCTV cameras in key locations are operational. The residents argue that these measures are necessary to curb the rising tide of crimes, which includes intimidation, robbery, injuries, and even murder. The community's sense of safety has been significantly shaken, and they are adamant that more effective actions are needed to protect them and prevent further losses.
Investigation Started: DSP
The investigation into the brutal murder of Vikas Prabhakar is now officially underway. Ajay Singh, the additional DSP of Sri Anandpur Sahib and Nangal, has taken charge of the investigation. While it is still the early stages, DSP Singh indicated that conclusive details could not yet be provided as the investigation is just beginning. He noted that they are actively collecting all necessary information from the local police personnel to build a comprehensive understanding of the case. Concurrently, Rajneesh Chaudhary, the in-charge at Nangal Police Station, reported that they are in the process of gathering all available CCTV footage from the area surrounding Railway Road. This effort is part of a broader attempt to piece together the events leading up to the murder and hopefully identify the perpetrators.
Traders Express Discontent Against Punjab Police
In the wake of the murder, there has been a rising wave of discontent among the local business community towards the Punjab police's handling of crime in Nangal. Rajesh Angra, president of the Jawahar Market Traders Association and the newly appointed block president of the Aam Aadmi Party, voiced significant frustration and anger following the recent violent incident. Angra expressed astonishment over the continuous criminal incidents in the area, emphasizing that despite these frequent occurrences, the culprits seem to evade capture, leading to ongoing losses for the people of Nangal.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the murder on Railway Road has escalated the atmosphere of fear throughout the city. Angra urgently called on the Punjab government to give immediate attention to the deteriorating security situation in Nangal. He pointed out that the morale among criminal elements appears to be worryingly high, which he believes is contributing to their increasing boldness. This sentiment is shared by many in the community who feel that immediate and effective measures are necessary to restore safety and order in Nangal.
In the aftermath of the shocking murder of Vikas Prabhakar, political voices have grown louder in their critique of the local authorities and the state government's handling of the situation. Ashok Sareen Hikki, the district general secretary of the BJP, strongly condemned the Punjab government for its perceived failures in maintaining law and order. He openly questioned the effectiveness of the state government and the Punjab police in their duty to protect citizens and prevent such crimes. Furthermore, expressing his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, Hikki called for drastic measures—demanding the imposition of President's Rule in Punjab to restore order and ensure public safety.
On the law enforcement front, SHO Nangal, Rajneesh Chaudhary, provided specific details about the murder incident. He stated, "The assailants, wearing helmets and masks, fled the scene after fatally shooting Vikas Prabhakar." This account confirms that the murder was executed with a degree of premeditation and that the perpetrators took measures to conceal their identities during the act.
Adding to the investigation's findings, Ropar SSP Gulneet Khurana disclosed that an empty cartridge was discovered at the crime scene, which points to the use of a firearm and suggests that the attack was planned. SSP Khurana emphasized that the police are considering various possible motives for the murder, including robbery, personal rivalry, or a premeditated act. "We're exploring all angles," he added, indicating that the investigation is comprehensive and aimed at uncovering every potential lead to solve the case and bring those responsible to justice.
These developments reflect a community grappling with fear and demanding more effective governance, while law enforcement officials work diligently to piece together the circumstances of this heinous crime and ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
