Sporting a lungi and rubber slippers, Ravindran is shaking up the fitness world, straight from Wayanad, Kerala, his wooden, energy-independent treadmills are setting new trends, this sustainable, budget-friendly invention is revolutionizing home fitness

For all the fitness enthusiasts out there who crave the luxury of having a treadmill in the comfort of their homes but are unable to afford one, there's exciting news. The days of traditional, high-priced treadmills are now fading into the annals of history, replaced by a new wave of innovative, eco-friendly solutions. One such genius alternative has emerged from Wayanad, where a local resident has managed to create an entirely wooden, environmentally friendly treadmill.

Meet E K Ravindran, a 54-year-old native of Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad. His occupation as a carpenter for over three decades has honed his skills, and now his innovation in the fitness industry has made a splash on various social media platforms. Ravindran's creation is not just a piece of fitness equipment, but a wooden masterpiece that works without the need for electricity or batteries. This unique innovation has been designed keeping simplicity, efficiency, and affordability in mind, making it an attractive and practical option for many.
Ravindran's inspiration for this project stemmed from his personal experiences and needs. “Due to my work, which involves long hours of sitting, I began experiencing back pain and other physical discomforts. This drove me to incorporate regular physical exercise into my routine," he explained. However, local environmental factors such as the presence of wild animals and stray dogs posed a risk, discouraging him from morning walks. These challenges forced him to think outside the box, motivating him to seek an alternative to the pricey traditional treadmill.
The journey of this wooden treadmill began four years ago when Ravindran first conceived the idea. Initially, it was solely for his personal use. “After crafting the initial model, I realized that there was room for improvement. I desired to further refine it to increase its comfort and efficiency,” Ravindran said.
Discussing the construction process of the wooden treadmill, he revealed that most parts of the treadmill are made from wood, making it truly a work of art. Only two components, a nylon belt and ball bearings, need to be purchased separately. This unique design approach not only reduces the cost but also lowers the environmental impact. Surprisingly, the total cost of this ingenious equipment is only Rs 12,000, which is a fraction of the price of a traditional treadmill. Assembling one wooden treadmill is a matter of just three days, proving that Ravindran's invention is not only cost-effective but also time-efficient.
Since his creation was shared on social media platforms, it has garnered much attention and appreciation. His carpentry experience of over 30 years is reflected in the quality of the treadmill, and as a result, the video of his creation has gone viral. He is now frequently contacted by people wanting to know more about this innovative piece of equipment.
In response to the increasing demand, Ravindran has even started offering two variants of the treadmill. The first variant features a slight incline, with 70 wooden planks attached to a nylon belt. This version operates on a staggering 70 ball bearings, ensuring a smooth, effortless running experience akin to high-end, conventional treadmills. This simple yet revolutionary invention truly embodies how creativity and resourcefulness can overcome financial constraints, making fitness accessible to all.
