"Exploitation knows no borders; justice shouldn't either": Teacher Matthew Smith, paid a staggering £67,000 for child abuse via the dark web, arrested with over 120,000 haunting images, his crimes spanned continents, exploiting India's most vulnerable
It is absolutely enraging to reflect upon the actions of Matthew Smith, a once-respected former deputy head teacher of an elementary school in London. This 35-year-old individual, cloaked under the guise of a trusted educator, committed unimaginably vile crimes. From the heart of the UK, he reached out via the dark corners of the web to exploit vulnerable children in India.

In November 2022, the vigilant eyes of the National Crime Agency (NCA) unveiled Smith's deplorable activities. As he was deeply immersed in a sinister 'chat' with a young Indian boy via the dark web, his wicked intentions were laid bare. He was coaxing the boy to share sexual images of even younger children in exchange for money. The NCA officials promptly arrested him from his residence in East Dulwich. An extensive search revealed that this was just the tip of the iceberg. They discovered a stomach-churning collection of over 120,000 images depicting the sexual abuse of children stored on his electronic devices.
In the timespan between 2017 and 2022, Smith's greed for such disturbing content knew no bounds. He poured out a staggering £67,000 to get on-camera sexual abuse of innocent boys in India, specifically targeting children between the ages of eight to ten. This man not only consumed this vile content but actively sought men, luring them with money, to wrench children from the safety of their homes and record their torment for his perverse satisfaction.
Judge Martin Griffith, during the court proceedings at Southwark Crown Court, voiced his revulsion. He exclaimed, “You were paying money – £67,000 – and asked them to provide images of the sexual abuse of young boys under 13.” With unmasked contempt, he pointed out how Smith blatantly "took advantage" of his victims, not hesitating to send over specific images, demanding they be recreated by the young boys he targeted.

Prosecutor Martin Hooper shed more light on the depth of Smith's wickedness, stating, “Over 120,000 child sexual abuse images were found on Smith’s computers along with messages to men in India in which he encouraged them to rape and abuse children.” One shivers to think that among the men Smith hired to enact these heinous deeds was someone he had groomed from a tender age.
Despite his admission of guilt on 17 chilling charges, which spanned from encouraging the rape of children under 13 to arranging their sexual abuse, his self-pitying confession during the NCA's interrogation was barely palatable. Smith whimpered, “Clearly I have an addiction, probably in this area. I don’t like the person I am. I would give anything to be normal. Anything.”
However, Senior Officer at the NCA, Helen Dore saw through his facade, stating unequivocally, “Matthew Smith is a prolific offender and master manipulator, who coerced young men into abusing children on his behalf.”
Peeling back the layers of Smith's past reveals a pattern. At 24, he had moved to Chennai, India. While he spent a significant amount of time in Nepal, between 2007 and 2014, he flitted between orphanages and NGOs across India. By July, he was back in the UK, securing a position at Thomas’s prep school in Battersea.
But now, all pretense has been stripped away. Smith will face the consequences of his egregious crimes, rotting away for at least eight years of his 12-year prison sentence, for the despicable harm he inflicted upon innocent children in India.
