Ekapada, unveiling the mystery of water - A journey into its quantum vibrations, the subtle energies it carries, and its symbolic representation in ancient temples discovering intersection of science, spirituality and timeless wisdom encoded in the atom
In Jambukeswarar temple, Thiruvanaikaval, Tamil Nadu, Lord Shiva is said to have manifested Himself as water (Neer) element. The presiding deities here are Lord Jambukeshwarar (Lord Shiva) with His consort Goddess Akilandeswari (Goddess Parvati).
The major part of the Lingam in this temple is submerged underwater, and hence it is called “Appu Lingam” or Lingam of water. Subsequently, this temple is also venerated as ‘Appu Sthalam.’ This Lingam of Lord Shiva is said to be “Swayambhu”, meaning ‘self-manifested’. As Lord Siva is believed to be seated below Jambu tree in this pilgrimage, the temple got its name Jambukeswaram. It is also called `Upadesha sthala` as the shrines of Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvati are seen facing each other following a legend. As an elephant was blessed after worshipping at this hallowed place, this temple came to be known as ‘Thiruvanaikka’.

Mystic significance of the temple
The sanctum sanctorum of Jambukeswaram temple has a perennial underground water stream which flows around the Lingam. Even after pumping the water out, it is always filled with water. Nobody knows the water’s source till today.
It is believed that Goddess Parvati herself got inception into cosmic truths from Lord Shiva in this holy place, like a student from a respected Guru. Thus, this temple is highly significant as Goddess Akhilandeshwari and Lord Shiva are depicted as student and guru respectively. Unlike other Lord Shiva temples where their divine marriage is of utmost significance, Jambukeswaram temple does not follow that ritual.
Devotees who worship here are blessed both in this birth and next birth. It is said that Goddess Akilandeswari bestows devotees with intelligence and good education. Their wishes of marriage and child are fulfilled.
Attavasukkal, Uma Deviyar, Suryan, Thirumal, Gowthamar, Brahman, Attathikku Balakhar, Jambu Munivar, Chandran, Aghasthiyar, the spider Gananatharul maliyavan, and the elephant Pushbadhanthan had attained glory by worshipping at this temple.
‘Ekapada - Trimurti’ at more than 1800 years old Jambukeswarar Temple, in Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) district, Tamil Nadu.
- Ek Pada Murthy (one-footed) god is a rare aspect of lord Shiva. It has 4 different names and forms. Ekapada-murti ("one-footed icon") form, he is depicted as one-legged and four-armed.
- Ekapada- Trimurti ("one-footed Trinity") form, he is depicted with the torsos of the deities Vishnu and Brahma, which together with Shiva form the Hindu Trinity (Trimurti) emanating from his sides, waist upwards and with one leg.
- Tripada- Trimurti ("three-footed Trinity") where along with the central one leg of Shiva, two smaller legs of Vishnu and Brahma emerge from the sides.
- Ek pada Bhairav:- Ek pada remains the most popular aspect of Bhairava in Orissa tantrism & associate him with the Vedic Aja Ekapada, fire/Agni, sacrifice, the cosmic pillar of the universe, and the Yogini goddesses. He is also considered the guardian of the Saptamatrikas.
- The Linga Purana, describes ek pad Shiva as “the lord who has one foot, four arms, three eyes and a trident … who is stationed after creating Vishnu from his left side and four-headed Brahma from his right side.”

Resonance of Life: Vibration as Water
Vibration is emblematic of both water and life, acting as the sustaining life force that permeates our existence.
The Quintessence of the Five Elements: Jambukeswarar, Thiruvanaikal
Among the five major Shiva temples of Tamil Nadu, collectively known as the Pancha Bhoota Stalam, Jambukeswarar in Thiruvanaikal holds a unique position. Each temple represents one of the Mahābhūtas, the five great elements, with Jambukeswarar symbolizing the element of water.
Intriguingly, an incessant underground spring sustains this nearly 2,000-year-old temple with a constant water supply.
A point of note in this temple is the presence of a Shiva statue with only one leg (ekapada). Intricately designed, this statue features Shiva sharing this singular leg with Brahma and Vishnu. The latter two deities emerge laterally, forming an angle of 104.5 degrees. Two animals and two human figures occupy the area in front of them.
The Atomic Composition of Water: A Temple and Molecular Connection
When we delve into the atomic structure of water, we encounter an intriguing correlation between the aforementioned statue (and by extension, the temple) and the water molecule. This presents an interesting perspective on how Vedic science, for thousands of years, has been aware of atomic composition and functions, and how this knowledge has been encoded in these temples.

Understanding the Mystique of Water
"Water is H2O, two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. But there's a third thing that makes it water, and nobody knows what that is." This profound statement by poet D.H. Lawrence (1929) encapsulates the mysterious aspect of water. The Japanese scientist, Dr. Masaru Emoto, further contributes to this enigma by stating that "Water can or does contain information." Felix Franks, a physicist and chemist, argues that "Among all known fluids, water is probably the most studied, yet least understood."
When water transforms into ice, the vibrant molecules coalesce into solid crystals. Physicist Marius Millot observed that this crystallization does not necessitate a cold environment; he created ice with a temperature half as hot as the sun. A remarkable form of ice, known as superionic ice, is intriguing. Despite being formed from water, it appears black, absorbing light. This ice exhibits an unusual property: it exists in a state between solid and liquid. In superionic ice, oxygen arranges itself in a fixed pattern, forming three-dimensional crystal lattices, while hydrogen flows freely as a liquid within this lattice.
Dr. Masaru Emoto's investigations reveal that water responds to music. For instance, classical compositions from Bach or Mozart induce the formation of exquisite crystal structures. Often, the character of the music is mirrored in the shape of these crystals. However, exposure to heavy metal music disrupts the crystallization process, causing the once beautiful hexagonal crystal to rapidly disintegrate into thousands of fragments.
Vastu science therefore focuses on fine-tuning objects or buildings to align with life-enhancing vibrations, harmonizing all forms of life on Earth.
While three-quarters of our physical bodies consist of water, on a subtler level, our entire body is a manifestation of space. This space comprises vibrations and information that shape structures analogous to water molecules.
Sound propagates over four times faster in water than in air, meaning that water not only carries but also amplifies vibrations and information. It is highly sensitive to both pressure and heat and demonstrates sociability akin to air, readily forming connections.

Appu Lingam
According to the mythological scriptures, Devi Parvathi in her Incarnation as Devi Akilandeswari performed penance in the Jambu forest (Thiruvanaikoil). She made a Lingam out of the water from the River Kaveri, installed it under the Venn Naaval Tree (Jambu tree in Sanskrit or Indian Blackberry in English), and performed abhishekam with the water of the holy river. So, that’s the mythological reason for calling shiva lingam Appu Lingam (Water Lingam). Lord was pleased with her devotion and appeared before Devi Akhilandeswari and taught her Siva Gnana for this reason this temple is also known as Gnanashethram. Devi Akhilandeswari took Upadesa (lessons) facing East from Lord Shiva, who stood facing west. Hence, this Temple is also revered as an Upadesa Sthalam. Thirukalyanam is not performed in this temple (because Devi was like a student and Lord Jambukeswara was like a Guru). As Akilandeshwari worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple, even today at noon the priest dresses like a female and does pooja to Jambukeswarar and also for ‘Go Maatha'(COW).

The concept of "God" triggers countless interpretations globally, each with its unique perspective yet resonating on the universal understanding of a singular, omnipotent entity responsible for creation. From this divine entity, all existence has sprung forth, a singular source birthing the entirety of reality.
The question of the nature of God, of what it is composed, and its origin continues to baffle humanity. Despite variances in theological explanations, the core premise remains grounded in the interpretation of reality. An attempt to understand this reality scientifically often sidelines the divine, leading to explorations in relative obscurity.
Vedic science, the oldest form of scientific knowledge, boasts a timeless quality, remaining perennially accurate, unaltered by spatial or temporal constraints. Those with the knowledge to inscribe the Vedas operated at a cerebral capacity of 100%, fully perceiving reality, compared to the present average of under 10%, granting limited understanding of reality.
This disparity in cognitive capacity stems from Earth's historical higher consciousness, resulting in increased planetary vibrations that fostered advanced life forms, including humans, animals, and plants. This era, known as the 'Golden Age,' is attributed to our solar system's position on the luminous side of our galaxy for 12,500 years and subsequently in darkness for an equal length of time. As of December 21, 2012, our solar system reentered the galaxy's luminous side, hinting at the dawn of a new enlightened age.
Our galactic cycle spans 2.5 million years, alternating between periods of enlightenment and darkness, or Yugas. These Yugas are divided into four stages: Krita (Satya) Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. Life expectancy fluctuated drastically across these eras, peaking at 1000 years during the Golden Age and plummeting below 50 years during the Iron Age.
The cosmic interplay between galaxies, periods of prosperity and decline, are all ordained by the divine entity universally referred to as God. God is an entity encompassing both the positive and negative aspects of existence, embodying the ultimate Unity.
According to the Pranava Veda, God is a state of consciousness or mind, unmanifested, the embodiment of silence and purity. God is an entity containing near absolute purity but with a slight impurity, enough to initiate creation. This creation is depicted as a divine spark, an explosion of such magnitude that it gives rise to both sound and light. This instant marks the onset of time, which, as it progresses, manifests as space.
Creation represents the birth of ENERGY, encapsulating time, space, light, sound, and fire at the moment of inception. The elements of water, air, and earth are integral components as well, forming a habitable space for physical entities. This initial phase, termed MAHAKAALA, saw the proliferation of VASTU, a singular particle replicating itself within God, composed of the same divine elements as its source.
Time, Space, Sound, Light, Air, Fire, Water and Earth | The Divine composition
God is the epitome, a harmonious unity of these elements, existing in an unmanifested state, while His Creation, the VASTU, symbolizes the tangible embodiment of these elements - a manifestation of God Himself. Therefore, VASTU represents the same form of ENERGY as God.
This ancient entity, which we perceive as God, self-realizes as ENERGY, conforming to specific universal laws, one of which is the RHYTHM.
With the genesis of creation, duality emerges from unity, steered by the RHYTHM, with TIME defining the flux within the universe dominated by TIME and SPACE. This temporal variability, with its oscillating implications, is evident in the study of the Yugas.
Space (AKASHA) constitutes one of the eight vital components of creation, indispensable and integral. It is accurate to assert that TIME gives birth to SPACE, as one cannot exist in the absence of the other. The Sthapatya Veda confines itself to the states within and post the creation of our universe, disregarding pre-creation states.
Before the inception of the world, these eight elements coalesced into a singular entity.
Creation stems from internal vibrations
The custodians of this sacred science are the RISHIs, SIDDHAs, MUNIs, and MAMUNIs. The science of Vastu equals MAYAMATA or VAASTU RAHASYA - the study of 'fine particles' attributed to BRAHMARISHI MAYA'S MAYAMATAM.
"WITHOUT SHILPIS, PROSPERITY ON EARTH REMAINS ELUSIVE": MAYA, MANU, TWASHTA, SHILPI, and VISHWAJNA.
They are SEERS, individuals possessing high and pure consciousness. They were the first to draft the PRANAVA VEDA and maintain the SKAANDA PURANA. However, the latter was eventually superseded and substituted with the SKANDA PURANA (short A).
"Eka eva pura vedo pranavha sarva vangmayha" - "The first and only VEDA of yore."
The focus is on the transformation of nothingness into existence, akin to the Sthapatya Veda. It encompasses the knowledge of EVERYTHING, from creation to infinite times - all the Vedas known today.
In the NEW SKANDA PURANA, there exists an enlightening tale about BRAHMA (God) and MURUGA (Subrahmanya). When MURUGA, possessing the essence of the PRANAVA VEDA, queried BRAHMA about the meaning of "OM," BRAHMA found himself at a loss for words. This lack of understanding saddened MURUGA...
The Transcendence of Pranava Veda in Om
The VAASTU / VASTU SHAASTRA, scriptures that document it, are authenticated through the lineage of SRI VAIDYANATHA STHAPATI and Dr. V. GANAPATI STHAPATI, a tradition preserved and disseminated globally from the original SKAANDA PURANA over thousands of years.
While discussing the subject, it's indispensable to acknowledge DIVINES, given their significant scientific contribution. Likewise, the inclusion of Hindu or Tamil languages is necessary, considering their essential place and meaning. Like the intricacies of Hungarian wordplay, these languages exhibit profound complexity, providing an opportunity for enhanced understanding and appreciation.
TAMIL, in its essence, means "sweetness".
"PARAMAANURITI PROKTAM, YOGINAAM DRSTI GOCARAM" - "The Paramanu atom is only visible to the meditator"
PARAMANU is synonymous with VASTU and VAASTU. It parallels Einstein's E=mc^2, which translates to VASTU = VAASTU. "E" (energy) equals AKASHA LIGHT equals "m" (mass) times "c" (the speed of LIGHT) squared. Thus, "E" equals the cube of "c", leading to the concept of LIGHT CUBES.
Could this be the manifestation of VASTU PURUSHA?
Arguably, yes. It signifies the inception of consciousness or awareness, the primary phenomenon. SHIVA personifies VASTU in the guise of light and sound (upright, vibrating, dancing, active), whereas VISHNU embodies VAASTU, the manifestation of light, matter (reclining, tranquil).
The two are identical, one at a micro scale, and the other perceptible to us, i.e., micro equals macro.
"TIME CREATES, PRESERVES, AND DESTROYS."
This concept is embodied in SHIVA.
When a process initiates, moving in one direction, it necessitates space, a platform to cover distance. Over time, time generates space. The cube, being three-dimensional, is SPACE itself.
The zero-dimensional point requires SPACE to exist. The one-dimensional line also necessitates SPACE. Moving from one point on the line to another takes time, affirming the importance of SPACE for its existence.
Consequently, our universe expands as TIME progresses. The time of creation is referred to as "ABSOLUTE TIME".
ABSOLUTE TIME: The Life Giver
It gives birth to time, space, light, sound, fire, water, wind, and earth, and everything else that has or will manifest in the universe. Hence, ABSOLUTE TIME permeates everything and everyone.
VAASTU PURUSHA, according to SHAASTRA, is the primordial subtle energy embodied on EARTH. "PURUSHA" represents the ancient, subtle energy, and "VAASTU" signifies the corporeal substance permeated by PURUSHA here on EARTH.
This is the essence of the universe, the universal consciousness.
In Sanskrit, this is termed "PRAJNA" or PRAJNANAM and UNARVU in Tamil. Otherwise, it is "OLLI" or "OLLI UNARVU". This represents UNARVU or PRAJNA, the inner consciousness of EARTH. It signifies the EARTH's characteristic physics, which self-rotates and moves forward. ("OLI" denotes sound, while "OLLI" signifies light.)
MAYA's Perception: EARTH as a Nurturing Entity
In the worldview of Maya, Earth is seen as a nurturing figure, reminiscent of a cow that gives generously and loves unconditionally. Earth exists as a living entity, interacting and existing harmoniously within the vast expanse of the universe.
Understanding the Basics: The Cubes | Let's break down this understanding into more digestible bits, starting with the concept of a small cube. This cube is brimming with light and sound, maintaining a consistent rhythm that relates to its boundaries. It has an equal ratio of 1:1:1. This implies that the length of one side of the cube can be visualized as a "Time Wave". The same idea can be extended to describe "Sound Waves" and "Light Waves". These are the first measures - the initial distance, the inaugural size, and the primary wave.
Now, within this cube, there are waves that traverse diagonally and also run parallel. These are referred to as Sutras. Sutras form the fundamental framework for understanding waves, dimensions, and rhythms. Time, in this context, endows dimensions with waves and distances.
Fascinating and simple, isn't it?
The Birth and Evolution of the Cube | So, this cube symbolizes the very first phenomenon - absolute symmetry and purity personified! This pristine state is referred to as "Naagara", synonymous with "Saatvika" or "Clean". The cube is static and stable. It either splits or spins based on decisions made by its consciousness.
Its subsequent state is one of dynamic activity, powered by the very universal fire (Unarvu, Prajna) that allowed its creation. This phase is named "Draavida", symbolizing "Raajasa", which stands for Dynamics. Thus, our once static and clean cube begins to rotate and enter a phase of dynamism.
During this phase, the cube morphs into a two-dimensional Octagon. As the cube's speed increases unchecked, its form eventually becomes a Circle, symbolizing rotation. This state is known as "Vesara" or "Taamasa". As it's visibly and physically no longer a cube, it seems far removed from its initial clean state, even though it's essentially still the rapidly spinning cube.
It's important to clarify here that this transformation does not mean that the cube has become the opposite of clean - dirty. It's a misconception harbored by many. None of these states is superior or inferior to the other; they simply possess different qualities. All three states - the clean, dynamic, and rotating - are integral to existence.
The Origin of Atoms and the Universe
Over time and space, this rapidly spinning little cube gives birth to an atom. If we were to halt an atom and break it down, we would discover numerous smaller cubes within it, still in their pristine state. Surprisingly, if we could stop the Earth from rotating, it would reveal itself to be a giant cube!
From a logical standpoint, the Universe could then be considered a massive rotating cube. The universe being a cube is a result of the initial tiny cube, with the aid of the Universe's inherent fire (Agni), generating additional cubes that spring forth from the original.
This multiplication of cubes happens at an incredible speed, with the cubes exponentially increasing in number to form the universe as we know it. The universe comprises these minuscule cubes of light and sound. As it expands symmetrically, it maintains its symmetry and cubic form.
Visualizing the Concept
To help visualize this concept, consider placing a cross within our initial tiny cube such that the center of the cross aligns with the center of the cube. Each arm of the cross extends beyond the cube's walls, rotating proportionally (1:1:1) in a direction parallel to the cube's walls. This action forms a Swastika, revealing the origin of the Swastika symbol.
The process repeats, with these tiny sutras forming new squares. In three dimensions, cubes generate more cubes in an infinite cycle until the process is halted.
Insights from Sthapatya Veda and Our Ancestors
The Sthapatya Veda describes the Big Bang phenomenon, stating that "space and material were one and the same". It was only when someone grew bored that the Big Bang ensued, heralding the first call for light.
In ancient times, humans sought refuge from the whims of nature by creating a shelter - a perfect cube. This cube, which served as both a house (Chidambaram) and temple (Sriranga), was a physical manifestation of the Veda known as Pranava Veda. The Indian religion at one point was Vaastu!
Our ancestors, the Huns, understood the dynamics of shapes. They knew that while a circle is in constant motion, a square or rectangular shape is stable.
Decoding Terms and Symbols | Vaastu Dharma or Vaastu Mata refers to a system based on numerical formulas. Chandras (Aushtab Chandas, Gayatri Chandas) symbolizes the structure of time. Tudi is a unit of time, representing vibration and pulsation.
The rhythm of time is indicated by a dancer's steps, and the accompanying claps set the rhythm.
Sounds can be imagined as tiny three-dimensional shapes or images.
In this context, Time is synonymous with Vishwakarman or Shiva. The Spirit of the Time, or Vishwa Brahman, reflects the omnipresence of time.

Perception of Time: KAALA
Traditionally, time is referred to as KAALA, an energy force that emanates from the inner consciousness. The rate at which KAALA manifests in energy equates to vibration. Without KAALA, energy cannot transition into space, leading to the assertion that Viswakarman is the creative element responsible for shaping universal space. When suitably disciplined, this energy transforms into what is technically described as "orderly speed" or TAALA, another term for rhythm.
Rhythmic oscillations of sound or matter result in structured, aesthetically pleasing forms. This process is regarded as a representation of universal creation. In the realm of religion, the phenomenon of time is recognized and personified as an aspect of KAALA.
The reverence for KAALA is captured in the phrase "काली त्वं कालस्वरूपी," which showcases the worship of the deity KAALI by the Indian Shilpiks.
Exemplary Symbols of KAALA: Temples of Kancheepuram and Madras
Two standout examples of this devotion to KAALA are seen in the Kaali Kottam temple in Kancheepuram and the Kaalikambal Kamateswara Temple in Madras.
These temples, known for their antiquity, are held in high regard. Major Kshetras (temple cities) usually have either KAALI or Kamakshi temples in close proximity, courtesy of the traditional Shilpis. Over time, temples dedicated to Ankala Parameshwari, Mariamman, and Kaliamman have also been established in Tamilnadu.
Viswakarman: The Masculine Aspect of Creative Power
The masculine embodiment of creative power is the Vedic entity Viswakarman. Since Shilpiks adhere to the principle of creation, as perceived in the universal vibration and encoded in the Vaastu Shastra (the grammar of creative forms), they are known as VISWAKARMAS.
The term Viswa is derived from the Sanskrit/Prakrit word "Akasa" (खम्), leading to the formation of "Khammakara" and "Karmakara", which signify Viswakara or Viswakarma. Furthermore, there is also the concept of Brahman - more precisely, the attribute-less Nirguna Brahman - known as Viswa Brahman.
