Udaipur: Hindu student who was stabbed by his Muslim classmate succumbs to his injuries

In a tragic development from Udaipur, a 15-year-old Hindu student, Devraj Mochi, has died following an altercation that led to him being stabbed by a Muslim classmate last Friday. Devraj sustained critical injuries from the incident and was promptly admitted to MB Hospital. Despite the medical team's efforts, his condition worsened, and he tragically passed away around 3 p.m. on Monday.

The incident has sparked considerable tension in the area, prompting authorities to deploy a large number of police officers outside the hospital to maintain order. This police presence was a response to the escalating unrest following confirmation of Devraj's death by the medical staff.

Compounding the community's grief, the victim's family voiced concerns that they were restricted from visiting Devraj during his final moments in the hospital. This claim led to a significant public demonstration, with a large crowd gathering to support the family. The rally commenced at Mukherjee Nagar Chowk in Udaipur, with participants chanting slogans as they marched toward MB Hospital. The demonstrators demanded that the hospital administration allow the family immediate access to see Devraj.

To prevent further disturbances and ensure public safety, hospital officials decided to restrict access, closing off both main gates of the facility. This move aimed to control the flow of people and prevent any potential escalation of the situation, which could compromise the safety of patients and staff alike.

In a heartfelt moment amidst the chaos, Devraj Mochi's sister, Suhani, along with a cousin, was able to share a poignant ritual with her brother. On Monday at around 2 p.m., after receiving permission from the District Collector, they tied a rakhi on Devraj's wrist, praying for his long life. This traditional ceremony, symbolizing the bond and protection between siblings, was a somber reminder of the personal tragedies unfolding from the broader communal tensions.

The situation in Udaipur remains tense following the violent incident at a local government school on Friday, August 16. Reports indicate that a Class 10 student was allegedly responsible for stabbing Devraj, leading to widespread unrest across the community. The news of the stabbing quickly spread, fueling anger and leading to destructive behavior; mobs took to the streets, setting vehicles ablaze and pelting stones, which only worsened the already volatile situation. The underlying motives for the stabbing at the government school in Bhattiyani Chohatta are still not known, adding an element of uncertainty and fear among the residents.

In response to the growing unrest, the local police have intensified their presence across various parts of the city to maintain order and prevent any further violent incidents. Additionally, an internet ban has been extended until 10 p.m. on the same day, aiming to curb the spread of rumors that could potentially incite more violence.

Amid these developments, the communal tensions in Udaipur have spiked, with several Hindu groups staging protests against the stabbing incident. The district administration, in a decisive move, has taken dramatic steps to quell the disturbances. On Saturday, with the aid of the police, authorities deployed JCB machines to demolish the house of the accused, citing its illegal construction on forest land as the justification under the existing regulations.

As the day progressed into the evening, the atmosphere in Udaipur grew increasingly tense. Major commercial hubs such as Bapu Bazar, Hathipole, Ghanta Ghar, Chetak Circle, and their surrounding areas saw an early closure of markets in response to the escalating unrest. Additionally, a shopping mall became a target for the violent factions, resulting in significant damage to the glass gates of several shops, which added to the chaos and fear among the citizens.

The situation near the government hospital also became critical as hundreds of people gathered, prompting a robust response from the police who worked to disperse the crowd to prevent further escalation of tensions. In a bid to restore and maintain order, the police enforced Section 144, which prohibits the assembly of more than four people, and took the additional step of suspending internet services throughout the city. These measures were aimed at controlling the situation by limiting communication that could potentially incite more violence.

Recalling the events of the previous Friday, the city was shaken by severe violence triggered by the stabbing incident. An angry mob reacted by setting nearly half-a-dozen cars on fire and engaging in stone pelting in various parts of the city. The underlying tension was further fueled by the fact that the students involved in the incident belonged to different communities, which exacerbated the communal tensions already present.

In an urgent response to the day’s events, District Collector Arvind Poswal and Superintendent of Police Yogesh Goyal convened a meeting with the hospital administration at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Following this meeting, Superintendent Goyal gave directives to enhance security measures around the hospital, including the construction of barricades outside the Emergency ward.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogesh Goyal, along with other officers, remains vigilant, continuously monitoring the security arrangements on the hospital premises to ensure the safety of all individuals present and to avert any further unrest.

In a public statement addressing the gravity of the situation, state Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham expressed his deep concerns. He urged the community, "I appeal to all to maintain law and order. We will try to give the harshest punishment to the accused. Our government stands with the bereaved family." This reassurance from a governmental official underscores the state’s commitment to justice and its support for the victim's family during this tumultuous period.

Amidst these developments, the grief-stricken mother of Devraj has vocally expressed her anguish and demand for justice, insisting that the perpetrator of this heinous act should face the death penalty. Her demand reflects the profound pain and desire for retribution felt by those closely affected by the tragedy.

The root of this tragic incident traces back to a confrontation between two 15-year-old classmates at a local government school in the Bhatiyani Chauhatta area. The altercation, which occurred during the post-lunch hours on Friday, escalated quickly, resulting in one student stabbing the other with a knife. This distressing event not only led to the unfortunate demise of a young student but also ignited a series of violent actions and communal tensions within the city, demonstrating the profound impact of personal conflicts on broader community safety and harmony.
