9 Female Bangladeshis Detained in Mira Road for Illegal Stay: Exploring the Changes in the Mumbai Suburb

On June 7th, law enforcement officials from the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar (MBVV) Police revealed the arrest of nine Bangladeshi women following a significant operation targeting illegal immigrants. The operation was prompted by intelligence that led to a comprehensive search in Mira Road's Shanti Nagar and Gita Nagar areas on June 5th. In addition to the women, another individual was arrested, accused of providing shelter to these foreigners without the proper documentation required for staying in India.

The MBVV police are actively searching for the homeowner where these women were found, as he is currently evading law enforcement. The police statement clarified the legal actions taken against those involved: "The woman who had given them shelter was also arrested. The owner of the house is wanted in the case. We have charged them under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Passport Act, and the Foreigners Act," an official reported.

On the 29th of February, the Mira Bhayandar Police detained eight illegal immigrants from Myanmar in the seaside area of Uttan, near Bhayandar. These individuals were identified as Imam Hussain Abdul Kasim (25), Mohammad Johar Noor Mohammad (39), Amir Hussain Asad Ali (42), Ali Hussain Abdul Sobi (49), Noorul Amin Yusuf Ali (52), Kamal Hussain Noor Kamal (35), Mohammad Zakir Hussain Abu Alam (30), and Hamid Hussain Ali Akbar (55). They were caught on the 26th of February at a fishing jetty in Chowk village while trying to evade the police. Remarkably, it was found that they spoke Hindi fluently, suggesting they had been in the country for some time. Nonetheless, their inability to produce valid documents led to their arrest under the Foreigners Act and the Indian Passport Act, reflecting the strict measures against illegal immigration.

The situation in Mira Road has grown increasingly complex as the area has reportedly become a hub for fundamentalist activities. The locality is described as being infested by individuals who are not just participating in but are actively promoting Islamist extremism. This radical presence has escalated into jihadi activities, with associated crimes that deeply affect the community's safety and social fabric. These actions have understandably caused considerable anxiety among local residents, particularly among the Hindu community who feel directly targeted and harassed.

According to a report by OpIndia, the previous year saw no fewer than 15 incidents where these extremist elements specifically targeted helpless Hindus, their families, and notably, their daughters. The report highlights the grim reality of the assaults, where victims ranged "from older women to girls as young as 13 years old" and were subjected to a horrifying sequence of events. They were "drugged, kidnapped, tortured, and sexually assaulted by these Muslim males."

These attacks are part of a disturbing pattern of violence that has deeply affected the community's sense of security and wellbeing. The detailed account by OpIndia sheds light on the scale and nature of the violence that has not only scarred the victims but also instilled a pervasive fear across the community. The recurrence of such heinous crimes in Mira Road demands a concerted effort from law enforcement and community leaders to address and prevent these aggressions.

A troubling pattern has emerged where Hindu women are misled into relationships under the pretense of love (Love Jihad), only to face severe consequences. These women end up being tormented and assaulted by their Muslim partners and husbands. Adding to their plight, it is not just the partners who are complicit; shockingly, many families of these men, including the mothers, condone these acts. These families often force the victims to marry their assailants and convert to Islam, further entrenching the victims in abusive environments.

The situation for the Hindu community worsens as their religious processions, a cornerstone of their cultural and religious identity, are increasingly targeted. These attacks on processions are consistent with patterns seen throughout India, where such gatherings have been disrupted by violence.

Compounded by these attacks, the Hindu community in Mira Road is in a dire state. They are forced to constantly seek justice and advocate for the safety of their women, battling against the wave of extremism that has swept through their area.

Obviously, the connection between anti-social activities and illegal construction in Mira Road has become starkly apparent. Events reached a peak on January 21st, when fanatical elements targeted Hindus celebrating the consecration of the Ram Mandir and the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 500 years. This violent episode prompted a firm response from local authorities. On January 23rd, the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC), with support from the Maharashtra Security Force and Mumbai Police, took decisive action by demolishing the unlawful constructions associated with the culprits.

This situation also came to light through an incident reported by OpIndia. A First Information Report (FIR) detailed a harrowing attack on a Hindu man while driving in Mira Road. According to the FIR, approximately fifty to sixty individuals from a specific community confronted him, threatening and assaulting him. His vehicle was attacked with rods, and the Hindu flag he had placed on it was forcibly removed. The attackers shouted slogans like "Allah-hu-Akhbar," struck him on the head with an iron rod, and even attempted to kill him. They displayed further disrespect by desecrating a poster of Lord Hanuman on his car, and, shockingly, they pelted stones at women and small children who were with him. "They raised slogans of Allah-hu-Akhbar, hit me on my head with an iron rod, and tried to kill me. They also saw a poster of Lord Hanuman on the car and puked on the poster. This has hurt our Hindu religious sentiments. They even pelted stones at women and small kids who accompanied me for a ride," read the complaint.

The increasing challenges in Mira Road, including the troubling trend of providing sanctuary to infiltrators and a growing Islamism influence, should raise significant alarm for both authorities and residents. These developments are not isolated incidents but indicators of a deeper, more systemic issue that is beginning to surface.

What is particularly disconcerting is the realization that these troubling incidents are merely the start of potentially greater problems. The situation in the region is becoming perilously ingrained and more complex. Mira Road is often featured in the media for all the wrong reasons, with frequent reports of attacks on Hindus. This pattern is quickly transforming the neighborhood into what is considered a "sensitive area." The trajectory of these developments suggests that the situation could deteriorate further. If current trends continue, it may not be long before the area is deemed a no-go zone for non-Muslims, where Hindus could face extreme dangers, such as lynching for merely entering the neighborhood. This forecast points to an urgent need for thorough and immediate actions to address and curb these issues, ensuring the safety and coexistence of all community members.
