For eight continuous months, Pooja faced unreciprocated advances and harassment from a local youth, Qasim Pathan, who is described by community members as holding radical views. This prolonged torment took its toll, driving the young girl to a point of no return. The grief and outrage among Pooja's family reached a climax following the tragic event, leading to a refusal to claim her body in protest. They demanded immediate and decisive action against the perpetrator, catalyzing a wave of anger and unrest in the community.
The local atmosphere was charged with tension as a sizable crowd converged in front of the Harsul Thane police station. This congregation of distressed community members and activists echoed the family's calls for justice, amplifying the urgency of the situation.
The severity of this case caught the attention of local BJP leader Ram Satpute, who vocally supported the grieving family's demands. He was among those calling for swift legal action to address the harassment that led to such a tragic outcome. His involvement underscores the wider community's refusal to stand by in the face of such injustices.
Local reports confirmed the details of the incident, reinforcing the community's narrative of a young life lost too soon under distressing circumstances.
For more details on the tragic series of events, Pooja Shivraj Pawar, who was pursuing her education in the 11th grade within the science stream, tragically found herself the target of unwarranted attention from Qasim Pathan, a local mechanic. Pooja, a city dweller, frequented her village for private tuition and had recently returned home to celebrate the festive occasion of Raksha Bandhan and the consecutive holidays. However, this return was marred by further harassment from Pathan who had, over the past eight months, persistently coerced her into reciprocating his feelings, exploiting her visits home as opportunities to distress her further.
Amid this turmoil, Pooja, overwhelmed by stress, tragically chose to end her life by leaping into a well. Upon discovering the harrowing incident, her relatives hurriedly retrieved her from the well and rushed her to Ghati Hospital. There, medical professionals could only confirm the worst; Pooja had passed away. This news deeply shocked her family, igniting a fierce demand for justice and leading to their refusal to claim her body, a stark protest against the relentless harassment that led to her untimely death.
"Police Inspector Atul Yerme and Sub-Inspector Ganesh Kedar assured the relatives of action," a promise made amidst the heightened emotions of a grieving community. Subsequently, the necessary procedural step of conducting a postmortem on Pooja's body was carried out, further documenting the grim reality of the situation.
The background of the accused paints a disturbing picture of unrequited affection turning into obsession and coercion. According to initial reports, Pathan was not only infatuated with Pooja but had also resorted to threats against her family, specifically threatening harm towards her brother should she continue to reject him.

The young man was already warned four times
The case of Pooja Shivraj Pawar highlights a persistent issue of harassment despite repeated warnings to the accused, Qasim Pathan. Pooja had confided in her family about the troubles Qasim was causing, prompting them to intervene directly. "He was explained about three to four times," her family members took it upon themselves to communicate clearly and firmly to Qasim, urging him to cease his troubling behavior. However, their efforts were in vain as Qasim continued his disturbing actions unabated.
Driven to despair by the ongoing harassment, and feeling utterly hopeless, Pooja made the heart-wrenching decision to end her life on Sunday, 18th August. Her tragic choice underscores the severity of the mental anguish she suffered due to the relentless advances and threats from Qasim.
The impact of Pooja's suicide resonated deeply within her community. The news of her death spread rapidly throughout the village, sparking profound outrage and leading to a large gathering of distressed relatives and neighbors at the local police station. During this highly emotional time, the collective call for justice was loud and clear, with her family demanding the severest consequences for Qasim, underscoring their grief and the community's intolerance for such egregious violations of personal safety and dignity.
"The girl meanwhile was immediately recovered and taken to the hospital where she was declared dead," further solidifying the tragic outcome of this prolonged harassment. The local authorities have responded to the gravity of the situation by formally booking Qasim under the appropriate sections of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyay Samhita, 2023.

Youth arrested by Harsul police
In the unfolding aftermath of Pooja Shivraj Pawar's tragic death, a significant legal move has been made by the local authorities. "A case has been registered on the complaint of Shivraj Pawar, father of deceased Pooja," leading to charges being filed against a group of individuals closely associated with the main suspect. The complaint named seven persons: Qasim Yasin Pathan (24), his father Yasin Subhan Pathan, cousins Ghaffar Subhan Pathan, Harun Subhan Pathan, brother Raju Yasin Pathan, cousin Jabbar Ghaffar Pathan, and Irfan Harun Pathan.
"Police Inspector Atul Yerme informed that the main accused Qasim has been detained by Sub-Inspector Ganesh Kedar of Harsul Thane," signaling a swift response from the local law enforcement. This detention is part of the broader investigative efforts that are currently underway to unravel the full scope of the incident and to ensure that justice is served for Pooja and her grieving family.
The ripple effects of Pooja's death were felt far beyond her immediate community. As news of the young student's desperate act spread, it galvanized various organizations within the city. Moved by the circumstances surrounding her death, these groups quickly mobilized. "Some office bearers of organizations rushed to Ghati and some to Harsul Thane and demanded action," showcasing a unified front in seeking accountability and reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
