In a harrowing incident in Kolkata, a young woman lost her life in a brutal attack by her estranged husband. On the evening of Monday, 6th May, 22-year-old Aribah Iqbal was first assaulted inside a local café located in the Beck Bagan area. Her husband, 29-year-old Irtiqua Sakib, did not stop there; he pursued her onto the street, stabbing her repeatedly, which led her to desperately seek help while fleeing.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the terror as the woman screamed for help while trying to escape from her assailant. The locals acted swiftly; they detained Irtiqua Sakib and promptly handed him over to the authorities.
The emergency services rushed the severely injured Aribah Iqbal to SSKM Hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, she was declared dead upon arrival. This tragic event highlights a previous complaint by Aribah against her husband, which had led to his arrest. However, he was later released on bond, as noted by the Times of India.
The police have taken Irtiqua Sakib into custody, and he is facing charges related to the fatal attack. This incident has raised concerns about domestic violence and the safety mechanisms in place to protect individuals from such devastating outcomes.
The conflict between Irtiqua Sakib and his wife, Aribah Iqbal, escalated dangerously in a local café. According to witnesses at the café on Nasiruddin Road, during a heated argument, Irtiqua used a sharp weapon to strike Aribah. She is a resident of Topsia’s Kohinoor Market area. The attack resulted in a severe head injury for Aribah, from which she started bleeding profusely.
In a desperate attempt to escape, Aribah fled the café, but the situation worsened dramatically. Witnesses recounted that while she was running away, heavily bleeding, her husband chased her down the street. In a brutal act, he stabbed her from behind, further endangering her life.
The local community members who were present during this terrifying ordeal acted with courage. They intervened by capturing Irtiqua Sakib, disarming him, and subduing him until the authorities arrived. The community's quick response included thrashing the attacker, holding him responsible for his heinous actions until the Karaya Police arrived at the scene.
The police took swift action, arresting the accused at the scene. This incident has shocked the community, highlighting the urgent need for addressing domestic violence and ensuring public safety in such conflicts.
Initially, Irtiqua slashed Areeba's head with a knife, inflicting a severe wound. The injury was so grave that Areeba, in a desperate attempt to save herself, screamed and ran from the café into the street.
However, the safety she sought was short-lived. Her husband, fueled by cruelty, followed her outside and repeatedly attacked her with a sharp weapon. This relentless assault resulted in Areeba bleeding profusely, leading to her tragic death. The horrifying scene unfolded in front of many onlookers who witnessed the brutal attack and its devastating aftermath.
The people present acted promptly; they intervened to save the critically injured Areeba, rushing her to SSKM Hospital. Despite their efforts and the urgent medical attention provided upon arrival, the doctors could not save her and declared her dead.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the couple was engaged in a heated argument inside the café before the attack escalated. Irtiqua's sudden violent outbreak with a sharp weapon caused excessive bleeding from Areeba's head wound. Even as she tried to flee to safety, her husband chased her down the street, attacking her multiple times with the knife, ultimately leading to her death.
This incident raises alarming concerns about domestic violence and the public safety measures in place to prevent such tragedies. The community's response in trying to save Areeba highlights the critical role bystanders can play in emergency situations, yet it also underscores the need for more effective interventions to protect individuals from domestic violence.
Fatal Meeting at Kolkata Café Ends in Tragedy
In a tragic turn of events in Kolkata, this young woman was fatally stabbed by her estranged husband after he had asked her to meet at a local café for what was described as a ‘settlement’. The victim, Areeba Iqbal, had previously accused Irtiqua Sakib of domestic abuse, leading to legal actions against him. The exact motive behind the meeting remains unclear, with speculations about whether Irtiqua intended for Areeba to withdraw the accusation or to reconcile.
On receiving news of the incident, Areeba’s family was promptly informed, and the police quickly responded by filing a murder case against Irtiqua. At the scene, authorities successfully recovered the weapon used in the attack. During the investigation, Irtiqua confessed to the police that his actions were driven by rage after his wife allegedly refused to heed his demands, which led him to commit the fatal assault.

The incident, which unfolded last Monday, has shaken the community. Areeba was known to be from the Kohinoor Market area of Topsia, while Irtiqua identified himself as residing in Beck Bagan. The background of domestic turmoil was highlighted by Areeba’s prior complaint against Irtiqua for domestic abuse and assault, leading to his arrest. With the situation escalating to murder, the police are now handling several serious charges against Irtiqua. The ongoing investigation involves examining the recovered remains and gathering further evidence to ensure justice for Areeba.
This incident has once again brought to light the severe impacts of domestic violence and the importance of effective legal and social support systems to protect individuals from such devastating consequences.
