Child Abuse Shock In Assam’s Silchar: Mother Forces Toddler To Drink And Smoke, Arrest Imminent

We strive to keep intoxicating substances as far away as possible from children. Exposure to secondhand smoking is considered child abuse, meaning one should not smoke with a child in the same room. But can you imagine a mother making her 1 year 8 months old baby smoke and drink? This sounds inhuman and shocking, but one such incident was reported from the Chencoorie Road area of Silchar.

Surprisingly, when confronted by the Child Helpline Unit and Sadar Police, the mother showed no fear or guilt, openly admitting to her actions.

In a deeply disturbing incident, a mother has been found making her 20-month-old daughter smoke cigarettes and consume alcohol in their rented home in the Chencoorie Road area of Silchar. The incident came to light when the Child Helpline Unit received alarming photographs and information about the child abuse on June 12.

This case has left the community in shock and disbelief. "Seeing a child, not even two years old, being subjected to such harmful substances by her own mother is beyond comprehension," said an officer involved in the investigation. The child’s health is a primary concern, and immediate steps have been taken to ensure her safety and well-being.

When the authorities reached the scene, they were met with a troubling sight. The mother, instead of being remorseful, openly admitted to her actions. She did not show any signs of fear or guilt, which added to the horror of the situation. The police and Child Helpline Unit were quick to act, ensuring that the child was taken into protective custody.

The incident came to light after the District Child Helpline, Cachar received a few disturbing photographs of child abuse from an informer on June 12. Acting on this tip, the District Child Protection Unit, Cachar, along with Silchar Sadar Police officials, raided the house situated on Chengcoorie Road. They apprehended the accused mother, who readily admitted to her actions and tried to justify them by saying, “We were just partying.”

The District Child Helpline Unit’s Supervisor, Debashish Dey, expressed his shock at the incident. He stated, “This is a shocking incident, and we have kept both the mother and child in a shelter home as legal procedures are to follow. The mother might get arrested today after an FIR is filed.”

Acting promptly on the tip-off, the Child Helpline Unit, along with officers from the Sadar Police Station, raided the rented home of Sangeeta Roy in Bagha Jatin Lane and rescued the toddler. Shockingly, Roy, who works in the health department, showed no remorse and readily admitted to her actions, claiming they were “partying in the house.”

Debashis Dey, Supervisor of the Child Helpline Unit, described the swift response to the call: “When we got this call that the mother was making her daughter smoke cigarettes while she was consuming alcohol, I informed the District Child Protection Officer, who contacted the Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Thana. Along with the Police, we reached the house where this incident was happening. When we confronted her, she confessed that they were partying in the house.”

The toddler has since been placed in a shelter home for her safety while the legal process takes its course. Ratnadeep Deb, another Child Helpline supervisor, emphasized the gravity of the situation. He stated that the child's well-being is the top priority and that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure she is safe and receives the care she needs.

“Consuming alcohol and smoking in front of any child is not just immoral but also an offence,” he stated.

The Child Welfare Committee of the District will now decide on the next steps for the child’s welfare. This incident has raised serious concerns about child safety and parental responsibility, highlighting the need for vigilance and swift action in cases of child abuse. This is the second case of brutality against a child by a mother in the last thirty days. The first incident, where a mother fed hot oil to her three-year-old daughter, was reported on May 31 from Sonai Road.

The district Child Helpline Unit successfully rescued both children and deserves all the appreciation for their vigilance. Their prompt response and dedication to child safety have been crucial in ensuring that these young victims are now in safe environments, away from further harm.

This latest incident underscores the importance of community awareness and the role of child protection services in safeguarding children. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities or potential cases of abuse to the authorities immediately. It is a collective responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of society.

The Child Welfare Committee's decision will be pivotal in determining the future care and protection of the rescued child. Ensuring that the child receives the necessary support and a safe environment is of utmost priority. The authorities are committed to taking all necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future and to provide justice for the victims.

As this case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in protecting children from abuse and neglect. The community's role in vigilance and reporting, combined with the swift action of child protection units, is essential in addressing and preventing child abuse. The efforts of the Child Helpline Unit and the police in rescuing the children from such dangerous situations are commendable and highlight the critical importance of their work.

Recently, a troubling video emerged on social media, showing a woman smoking a cigarette while carrying a child and making a reel. This video quickly gained attention for its disturbing content. In it, the woman can be seen engaging with an old, popular Bollywood song, lip-syncing and shaking the child, all while managing a cigarette in her hands. The presence of the innocent child in such a scenario has raised concerns and provoked widespread disapproval.

Shortly after the video was released online, many viewers expressed their disgust, calling the woman's actions "pathetic" and strongly urging that she be held accountable. The general sentiment among netizens is one of dismay and a call for immediate action to prevent such irresponsible behavior from recurring on social media platforms.

One social media user, known as @Pranav22061999, reflected the sentiments of many by commenting, "Very sad and heartbreaking to see these kinds of content on social media with Babies." This reaction highlights the growing unease over the casual portrayal of potentially harmful behavior around children on widely accessible platforms.

Further controversy was added by another user who posted the original video. This individual claimed, after reviewing the woman's timeline, that the child in the video did not appear in any other content posted by her. This led to speculation that the child might have been temporarily taken from someone else specifically for creating this video. The user compared this act to the infamous suggestions made by Kuwari Begum, who allegedly encouraged her followers to engage in heinous acts with infants. According to the user, the woman’s timeline is predominantly filled with videos involving smoking, adding another layer of concern regarding her influence and activities on social media.

These two horrific incidents come just days after a Ghaziabad-based Youtuber Kuwari Begum was held for allegedly teaching her young followers how to sexually abuse infants.

In the video that ultimately resulted in her attest, “Kuwari Begum” appears to read a request from one of her followers who seems to have asked about different tricks to masturbate. "First identify a newborn. Tell her mom that I want to take them to play with me. Then you just have to take out the kid and do something. If I would have a L**d, I would have tried it. Wao!," Begum replied to the question asked by her follower.

These incidents have sparked a broader discussion about the responsibilities of social media users and the platforms themselves in monitoring and controlling the content that may pose a risk to minors. The community's reaction underscores a pressing need to safeguard vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from being exploited in the pursuit of viral content. The outcry is a clear demand for stricter oversight and potentially, punitive measures against those who exploit these platforms for harmful or negligent purposes.
