The family, comprising Ajay's parents and his six sisters, resides in a modest one-room house in the village, part of the Payal division in Ludhiana district. They have faced life's challenges without the support of owning agricultural land, a common means of sustenance in rural India.

Ajay's upbringing in this tight-knit family in Ramgarh Sardaran, a part of Ludhiana’s Khanna, was filled with love but marred by financial hardships. His father, Charanjit Singh, recalls how Ajay was recruited into the Indian Army as an "Agniveer" in 2022, a proud moment that brought a ray of hope to their lives.

He also spoke with his mother,” his father Charanjit Singh Kala recalled, his voice heavy with sorrow. Ajay’s mother, overcome with grief, remembers the simplicity and care in her son's words during their final conversation. “Talking to me over the phone, he asked whether I had had my dinner,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes. He emphasized that Ajay's sacrifice deserves equal respect and dignity as is given to other deceased soldiers who die for the country. “Ohnu vi shaheed da darja milna chahida hai (He also deserves the status of a martyr). We are proud of his sacrifice for the country but his death deserves equal respect and dignity as it is given to other soldiers who are not Agniveers.”

Despite Ajay's enlistment in the Army, the family's financial struggles continued unabated, a reality that Charanjit Singh Kala, Ajay's father, shares with a heavy heart.

“I worked as a labourer for my entire life. After I started keeping unwell, Ajay’s mother started working in others’ homes to cook and clean so that we could have two meals a day,” said Charanjit Singh Kala. 

Ajay's decision to join the Army was fueled not only by his personal aspirations but also by his family's dire financial situation. Charanjit Singh Kala acknowledges that they were aware of the potential limitations in terms of benefits for Agniveers compared to other soldiers. Yet, Ajay was determined to improve his family's circumstances and thus chose to walk this path.

His father reminisced, “We had taken some loan for the marriage of our four daughters. After clearing class-12 from a local government school, Ajay had also worked as a construction laborer for sometime but as soon as the Agniveer vacancies opened, he immediately applied for it. He said it was his dream to experience life as a soldier even if for four years.” This narrative underscores Ajay's commitment to his dream and his sense of responsibility towards his family. Even as he pursued his passion for the military, his actions were always anchored in the wellbeing of his loved ones.

Balwinder Singh's statement paints a stark picture of the family's struggles: “This family’s financial condition is so bad that it is even difficult to explain in words. Their only hope was their son who is gone too. We hope that the Punjab government will give them their due Rs 1 crore compensation as per their policy and Centre too would reconsider their decision and give due benefits to families of deceased Agniveers. They have lost their everything.” His words underscore the harsh reality faced by the family, who had pinned their hopes and future on Ajay, their son and brother.

Responding to the tragedy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his condolences: “Agniveer Ajay Singh, who hailed from village Ramgarh Sardaran near Khanna (Ludhiana), attained martyrdom in a landmine blast.” 

Chief Minister Mann further emphasized Ajay’s bravery, stating, “The brave jawan laid down his life while performing his duty valiantly,” and reassured that the Punjab government is with his family at this tragic hour.
