Brutality Against Student Heading to Daroga Exam; Mobile Snatcher Pushes Her from Moving Train, Right Leg Severed

In a horrifying incident that casts a shadow on the safety of railway passengers, 25-year-old Saloni Kumari faced a brutal and life-altering experience. Saloni, the daughter of Pramod Pandey, hails from Unchi Dih village, located in the jurisdiction of the Palnawa police station. This promising student's journey turned tragic while she was en route to a significant milestone in her academic and career pursuits.

Saloni embarked on her journey from Ramgarhwa station, with hopes high and aspirations of becoming a Sub-Inspector. Her destination was the Jagat Singh Kushwaha Balika Uchch Vidyalaya in Turkaulia, where she was scheduled to appear for the Daroga (Sub-Inspector) recruitment examination. This exam, a gateway to a prestigious position in law enforcement, was being conducted across Bihar on that ill-fated Sunday.

The Raxaul Muzaffarpur MEMU train 05288 was not just another train for Saloni; it symbolized a path to achieving her dreams. However, the journey took an unexpected and tragic turn. Onboard the train, a group of miscreants targeted Saloni in a heinous act of violence. In an attempt to steal her mobile phone, these culprits not only invaded her personal space but also threatened her safety. Saloni, showing courage and resilience, resisted the theft. But the situation escalated quickly and took a turn for the worse. The struggle resulted in Saloni being pushed off the moving train, a violent act that led to tragic consequences. Saloni's right leg was completely severed from the knee, a catastrophic injury that starkly contrasts with the hopeful journey she had embarked upon.

The severity of the fall was such that Saloni's right leg was severed, a devastating outcome for anyone, let alone a young aspirant on the cusp of her career. The incident didn't just rob Saloni of her physical mobility but also cast a shadow on her dreams of becoming a Daroga.

In addition to the loss of her leg, Saloni sustained severe injuries to one of her arms. The location of this tragic incident, near Sugauli in East Champaran, became the site of a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in public spaces. After the incident, Saloni received initial medical attention but had to be referred to Motihari for further treatment, indicating the gravity of her injuries.

The injured student was identified as Saloni Kumari (25), daughter of Pramod Pandey, a resident of Unchi Dih village in the Palnawa police station area. This act of aggression wasn't just a theft; it was an assault on her dignity and safety.

Reacting swiftly to the distressing situation, the Railway Police demonstrated commendable response and empathy. Upon learning of the incident, they immediately rushed to the scene, exemplifying the urgency and seriousness required in such grave situations. The Station House Officer (SHO), Jaiprakash Singh, showed remarkable humanity and dedication. In a poignant display of compassion, he carried the injured student on his shoulder to the station, ensuring she received the urgent medical attention she needed. This act of kindness amidst the chaos highlights the humanity that exists even in the darkest of times.

Saloni was first taken to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Sugauli, where she received initial treatment. The medical staff at the PHC faced the daunting task of treating her severe injuries, which included not only the complete severance of her right leg below the knee but also a significant cut on the palm of her left hand. Recognizing the severity of her condition, the medical professionals referred her to Motihari for further, more specialized care.

Amidst her pain and trauma, Saloni recounted the harrowing experience. Through her tears, she reported that a middle-aged miscreant was responsible for her plight. He not only snatched her mobile phone but also pushed her from the moving train, an act of cruelty that has forever changed her life. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities that individuals, especially women, face in public spaces.

Upon receiving the distressing news of Saloni's fall from the train, SHO Singh and his team acted promptly, demonstrating their commitment to public safety and emergency response. Arriving swiftly at the scene, SHO Singh displayed an extraordinary act of humanity and professionalism. He personally carried Saloni on his shoulder, ensuring her rapid transport to a place where she could receive immediate medical attention. This quick reaction in the face of crisis highlights the crucial role of law enforcement in providing aid and comfort in times of need.

The police, understanding the severity of the situation, are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. They have taken steps to keep Saloni's family informed about the incident, ensuring that they are up-to-date with her condition and the ongoing investigation. The case has sparked widespread discussion and concern among the public, especially regarding the circumstances of Saloni's fall. It was initially speculated that Saloni fell during a scuffle with pickpockets who were attempting to snatch her mobile phone. However, SHO Jaiprakash Singh has refuted these claims, stating that there was no information to support this scenario.

The investigation is moving forward with the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) based on Saloni's statement. This step is crucial in the pursuit of justice and highlights the police's commitment to uncovering the truth behind this tragic event.

Saloni's ordeal continued as she was first admitted to the Sugauli PHC by the Sugauli Railway Police and the Government Railway Police (GRP) for immediate treatment. Recognizing the need for more specialized care, she was then referred to Motihari. In a relentless pursuit of saving her life and providing the best possible medical care, Saloni was subsequently transferred to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) in Patna.

Tragically, despite the best efforts of the medical professionals and the care she received, Saloni succumbed to her injuries and passed away during treatment. This devastating outcome marks a somber end to a young life full of potential and aspirations.

Tragedy Strikes a Family: The Loss of a Daughter, a Dreamer, and a Beacon of Hope

In a small village where each family's story is closely knit into the community's fabric, the loss of Saloni Kumari has left a void that is deeply felt by her family and neighbors. Saloni, the daughter of Pramod Pandey, a farmer, and Reena Devi, a ward member of Unchi Dih, Ward Number 5, was more than just a family member; she was a symbol of aspiration and hope in a community where every achievement is celebrated collectively.

Pramod Pandey, who has dedicated his life to agriculture, supporting his family through the ups and downs of farming, is now engulfed in a profound sorrow that has also descended upon the entire village. The news of Saloni's tragic death has not only shattered her family but has also cast a pall of mourning over the community that had watched her grow and flourish.

Reena Devi, Saloni's mother, a figure of strength and leadership in her ward, finds herself in a state of inconsolable grief. As a ward member, she has been a pillar in her community, but this personal tragedy has brought an indescribable pain to her doorstep.

Saloni was not just a daughter and a sister; she was a beacon of hope and talent. She completed her matriculation from Raghunathpur High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Raxaul College. Her educational journey was marked by determination and excellence. Saloni's two brothers, Subham and Saurabh Pandey, looked up to her as a role model. Subham, a matriculation student, and Saurabh, studying in the 8th grade, have lost not just their sister but their guiding star.

Saloni was a shining example of hard work and ambition. She was not only determined to succeed but also deeply committed to lifting her family out of financial hardship. Her dedication to securing a government job, particularly the esteemed position of a Daroga (Sub-Inspector), was fueled by a desire to provide for her family and ensure a brighter future for her brothers.

The dream that Saloni harbored went beyond personal success; it was interwoven with the aspirations of her family and her father. She saw herself as a pillar of support, aiming to provide her brothers with higher education and to fulfill her father's dreams. This sense of responsibility and love for her family was a driving force in her life.

However, in a cruel twist of fate, her dreams and those of her family were irreparably shattered. Despite her immense courage and the will to survive, Saloni fought a brave battle for six long days, enduring severe injuries, including the loss of her hand and leg. But, tragically, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving behind a family with broken hearts and unfulfilled dreams.

A Village in Mourning: The Aftermath of a Tragic Incident and the Pursuit of Justice

The tragic incident involving Saloni Kumari has left her village engulfed in a somber silence, a testament to the deep impact her loss has had on the community. The villagers, united in their grief, find themselves grappling with a profound sense of loss and disbelief. Questions to the divine, "Oh God, what have you done?" echo through the village, reflecting the collective heartache and the struggle to come to terms with the cruel twist of fate that claimed Saloni's life.

As the village mourns, the procedural aspects of the tragedy are being addressed. Saloni's postmortem is being conducted in Patna, a necessary step in understanding the full extent of her injuries. Meanwhile, the village awaits the return of her body, a moment that will bring closure to some but will also mark the beginning of a long journey of healing and acceptance for her family and friends.

In the days following the accident, the law enforcement authorities have been actively pursuing the case. Ten days after the heart-wrenching event, a Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the Muzaffarpur Railway Superintendent of Police (SP), made significant progress. The Railway SP's assurance that the incident was taken very seriously has been substantiated by the arrest of three suspects. This includes the robbers involved in the incident and the individual who bought the stolen mobile phone belonging to Saloni. The arrests signal a crucial step towards justice, offering a semblance of solace to the bereaved family and the shocked community.

The Railway SP provided a detailed account of the incident. On December 17, Saloni Kumari, approximately 23 years old, was traveling on train number 05288. It was during this journey, near Sugauli Railway Station, that a harrowing sequence of events unfolded. An unidentified criminal snatched Saloni's Infinix mobile phone and jumped off the moving train. In a desperate attempt to retrieve her phone, Saloni gave chase, leading to a tragic accident. She slipped and fell under the train, resulting in the amputation of her right leg and arm.

Saloni's injuries were severe, necessitating her admission to the ICU at PMCH for intensive treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Saloni Kumari passed away on December 22, 2023, succumbing to her injuries. This narrative from the Railway SP adds another layer to the understanding of the incident, illustrating the chaotic and tragic circumstances that led to Saloni's injuries and her eventual death.

Rigorous Investigation and Arrests: Unfolding the Events of a Tragic Crime

Understanding the gravity of the situation, the Railway SP immediately directed Deputy Superintendent of Railway Police (DSP) Umesh Kumar, based in Camp Bettiah, to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Furthermore, to bolster the investigation, DSP Atanu Dutta from Muzaffarpur Headquarters-01 was sent to Sugauli to assist the SIT.

The investigation itself was comprehensive, involving both technical analysis and ground-level operations. Continuous raids were carried out in search of suspects, indicating the relentless pursuit of justice by the authorities. This dedicated effort led to the arrest of Ranjit Kumar Giri, a 19-year-old from Majhaulia, West Champaran. His apprehension in connection with Saloni's case marked a significant breakthrough in the investigation.

Upon detailed interrogation, the suspect revealed critical information about the crime. He confessed to collaborating with Shaukat Ali alias Jhunna, from Sugauli, East Champaran, in committing the heinous act. The details of the crime unravel as the suspect admitted to snatching Saloni's mobile phone and subsequently selling it to Jabrej Alam for 1500 rupees. This transaction, with 500 rupees paid upfront and the remaining 1000 to be paid later, highlights the callous disregard for human life exhibited by the culprits.

Further solidifying the evidence, the stolen mobile phone was recovered from Jabrej Alam. However, it was found in a damaged condition, symbolizing the physical and emotional destruction wrought by the crime. The recovery of the phone not only serves as a crucial piece of evidence but also as a poignant reminder of the tragic loss of a young life full of promise.

Arrests and Recovery: Detailed Profile of Suspects and Recovered Items

Following the diligent investigation into the tragic incident that led to the death of Saloni Kumari, the Railway Police have made significant progress. They have apprehended three suspects, each playing a role in the chain of events that culminated in this tragedy. The detailed profiles of these suspects provide insight into the individuals behind this heinous crime.

  1. Ranjit Kumar Giri: A 19-year-old youth from Parsa Purabariya Tola, Majhaulia, West Champaran. He is the son of Sajawal Giri. His young age juxtaposes sharply with the gravity of the crime he is involved in, raising questions about the influences and circumstances that led him down this path.

  2. Shaukat Ali alias Jhunna: He is the son of Junav Ali and hails from Naya Tola, Ward No. 06, Bangra Gumti, in Sugauli, East Champaran. The alias 'Jhunna' hints at a possibly known presence in criminal activities, indicating a history that may have culminated in this tragic event.

  3. Jabrej Alam: A 30-year-old individual, the son of Najju Miyan. He resides near the railway track in Bangra Gumti, Sugauli, East Champaran. As an older member of this group, his involvement raises concerns about the broader network and the extent of criminal activities in the area.

Alongside the arrests, the recovery of stolen items marks a crucial achievement in the investigation. The items recovered include:

  1. The Stolen Infinix Mobile: Saloni Kumari's mobile phone, bearing the number 8757392361, was recovered. However, it was found in a damaged condition, a physical testament to the violence and chaos of the crime.

  2. Additional Mobile Phones: A total of 13 mobile phones were seized from the criminals during the raid. This significant recovery indicates a broader pattern of criminal activity beyond the tragic incident involving Saloni. The presence of multiple mobile phones suggests a habitual engagement in theft and possibly a wider network of illicit transactions.

Separate cases have been registered against the suspects and others involved.

Names and positions of police officers/staff included in the SIT:

  • DySRP Umesh Kumar
  • DySRP Atanu Dutta
  • Police Inspector Santosh Kumar

Police Inspector Santosh Kumar, along with Assistant Police Inspectors Jay Prakash Singh and Ajay Kumar Paswan, played vital roles in the investigation. Their investigative skills, attention to detail, and commitment to the case were instrumental in gathering the evidence needed to build a strong case against the suspects.

Deputy Assistant Police Inspector Deepak Kumar, from the Technical Branch, along with other police personnel, contributed significantly to the technical aspects of the investigation. Their expertise in handling technical evidence and analyzing data was key in piecing together the events that occurred on that fateful day.

The successful resolution of the case has not gone unnoticed. In recognition of their exemplary work, the Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Police Inspector are being awarded commendation letters. These letters serve as a formal acknowledgment of their exceptional service and dedication to duty.

Furthermore, the Assistant Police Inspectors and other police personnel involved in the case are being rewarded with cash prizes. This monetary reward is a gesture of appreciation for their hard work and unwavering commitment to ensuring justice is served.

The community, still reeling from the loss of a promising young life, looks towards the justice system with hope. The hope is that such rigorous enforcement of law and order will not only bring justice to Saloni's family but also act as a deterrent to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The effective resolution of this case was vital in restoring public confidence in the safety of public spaces and the efficacy of law enforcement agencies.
