After Paris Olympics Organising Committee Fails to Provide Air Conditioners Amidst High Heat and Humidity, Indian Sports Ministry Steps in to Provide ACs to Indian Athletes

In the midst of a sweltering summer in Paris, the latest edition of the Olympics is facing significant challenges related to the weather. The city is currently experiencing unusually high temperatures and humidity levels, making conditions difficult for athletes from around the globe. Despite these harsh weather conditions, it has been reported that the Olympics organizing committee did not provide air conditioning in the athletes' accommodations. This oversight has left many competitors struggling to find relief from the relentless heat.

Recognizing the severe discomfort faced by the athletes, the Indian government has taken a proactive step to ensure the well-being of its participants. The Sports Ministry of India has provided 40 portable air conditioners to the Indian athletes staying at the Olympic Games Village. This gesture aims to offer some respite from the heat and improve their living conditions during the competition.

According to a source from the Press Trust of India (PTI), the decision to send air conditioners was made after discussions with the Indian Olympic Association and the French Embassy. The source emphasized, “Taking into consideration the issues faced by athletes at the Olympic Games village because of the temperature and humidity in Paris, the Ministry of Sports decided to provide 40 ACs in the Games Village rooms where the Indian athletes are staying.”

Paris has recorded temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius, and the accompanying high humidity has compounded the difficulties faced by visitors. The absence of air conditioning in the athletes' rooms had exacerbated an already challenging situation, potentially affecting their performance and recovery.

The portable AC units, described as plug-and-play, have already been installed and are in use by the athletes. These units are expected to significantly improve their comfort, allowing them better rest and recovery amidst the ongoing games.

In terms of competition achievements, India has made a commendable start at the Olympics, securing three medals so far, all in the sport of Shooting. This success is noteworthy and highlights the athletes' resilience and determination under challenging conditions.

No Support from Bhagwant Mann Led AAP Government in Punjab, State Ministers Have Big Role in Decline of Sports in the State: Olympian Arjun Babuta

In a candid revelation that has stirred conversations around governmental support for athletes, Olympian Arjun Babuta has expressed his discontent with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led government in Punjab. Babuta, who recently competed in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the Paris Olympics, finished a commendable 4th, narrowly missing out on the bronze medal in a highly competitive field.

Arjun Babuta’s performance, while impressive, was overshadowed by his public dissatisfaction with the lack of support from his home state's government. Despite achieving significant milestones in his sporting career, Babuta pointed out that he has not received any substantial support or recognition from the Punjab government. This lack of support, he suggests, reflects a broader trend of apathy towards sports and athletes in the state.

Upon his return from Paris, where he competed alongside bronze medalist Sarabjot Singh and other Indian athletes, the 25-year-old shooter did not mince words about his frustrations. He highlighted the disconnect between the achievements of Punjab's athletes and the support they receive from the state administration. Babuta emphasized the need for a job rank that reflects his accomplishments in sports, expressing hope that the current AAP government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann would respond more positively to his and other athletes' needs than the previous Congress-led administration.

Babuta's dissatisfaction stems from unfulfilled promises made by high-ranking officials in Punjab. "I have not received any benefit from the state government. In 2022, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and then Sports Minister of Punjab Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer promised to offer me a government job. I have also written a letter in this regard also but in reply, I was told to wait…It is very disappointing and I hope they will look into it as job security is very important," Babuta stated. His comments reflect a broader issue of administrative delays and unmet commitments that have left him and potentially other athletes in a precarious position regarding their professional futures.

The shooter also noted the ongoing challenges he has faced with governmental support over different administrations. "I demanded the same from the previous Congress government in Punjab. Governments are changing but the demand remains the same…The hope is slowly fading away," he said. This indicates a continuous struggle for recognition and support, irrespective of the political party in power, pointing to systemic issues within the state's approach to nurturing its athletes.

Highlighting the stark contrast in treatment between athletes from different states, Babuta expressed his disappointment in the Punjab government's lack of enthusiasm and support. "The Chief Ministers of different states cheered and met the shooters from their respective states who participated in the Olympics. But nothing was done by the Punjab CM and Punjab Sports Minister for the shooters from Punjab…They didn’t even welcome us at the airport. If they blame for the decline of sports in Punjab, the ministers of Punjab have a big role in it,” he remarked. This lack of recognition and support at even basic levels, such as a welcome at the airport, showcases the neglect that athletes from Punjab are experiencing, which Babuta believes is contributing to the decline of sports in the state.

Arjun Babuta's candid revelations put a spotlight on the regional disparities in how athletes are supported and recognized by their state governments, urging for a reevaluation of sports policies and support mechanisms in Punjab to better support its athletes and enhance the state's reputation in the sports arena.
