Mumbai BMW Hit-and-Run: Accused Mihir Shah Arrested After 72 Hours, Victim Found 2 km from Accident Scene

In the early hours of Sunday, Pradeep Nakhwa and his wife Kaveri, a fish-seller couple, set out on a routine trip to Sassoon Dock to purchase fish. After securing their day's supply, they loaded their scooter and embarked on the journey back to their home in Koliwada. Tragically, this journey would be their last together.

As they were heading home, their lives took a devastating turn. A speeding BMW crashed into their scooter from behind. The impact was so severe that Pradeep was hurled onto the road, while Kaveri was dragged along with the scooter. In a desperate attempt to find his wife, Pradeep chased the fleeing vehicle for half a kilometer but to no avail. Overwhelmed and frantic, he approached the police for help. It was only later that he received the heart-wrenching news that Kaveri's body had been discovered at the Bandra-Worli sea-link, approximately 2 kilometers away from the accident scene.

In an interview with NDTV, Pradeep recounted the harrowing moment: "I ran behind the car for half a kilometre, but could not find the body. I was crying, screaming, but he did not stop. If he had stopped for a second, nothing would have happened," he said, visibly distraught. Sitting beside him during this emotional recount was their daughter, clutching a photograph of her mother.

Addressing the aftermath and his grievance with the authorities, Pradeep expressed his despair and accusation. "My child is crying for mother. Where do I get her?" he lamented, struggling to hold back tears. He pointedly accused the local administration of favoritism, alleging that they were protecting Mihir Shah, the driver involved in the incident and the 24-year-old son of Rajesh Shah, a deputy leader of the Shiv Sena in Palghar district. Despite the severity of the incident, Rajesh Shah was briefly detained and has since been released on bail.

Adding to his grievances, Pradeep highlighted the disparity in social stature and its influence on justice: "The accused is being shielded because he is an influential man's son. I am a poor man. No one cares about the poor," he stated.

The case has captured public attention, spotlighting issues of accountability and privilege. Mihir Shah, who was at the wheel during the accident, was only apprehended 72 hours after the incident, raising questions about the efficacy and impartiality of law enforcement in cases involving individuals from influential backgrounds. Pradeep Nakhwa's poignant interview with NDTV not only sheds light on his personal tragedy but also casts a shadow on the broader implications of social inequality in the administration of justice.

Pradeep Nakhwa, the bereaved husband, has openly questioned the actions of state officials, including Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis. In a poignant query, he asked, "What is the home minister doing? Are you silent because the accused's father is the Chief Minister's man?" This direct challenge highlights the perceived inaction or slow response from state authorities, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest due to political connections.

Responding to the mounting public pressure and media coverage, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the incident, describing it as "unfortunate" and reassured the public that justice would be served fairly. He emphasized, "Law will take its own course, everyone is equal before law," suggesting a commitment to impartiality in the handling of this case.

Further developments in the investigation have revealed that the aftermath of the crash involved more than just the driver. Mihir Shah was arrested on a Tuesday, three days after the fatal incident. In a significant turn of events, 12 individuals, including Shah's mother and two sisters, were also taken into custody. The police suspect that these family members played a role in helping Shah evade arrest for over 72 hours after the accident.

As the investigation into the tragic hit-and-run case in Mumbai continues to unfold, the police are now faced with a critical decision regarding the three women—arrested from Shahpur—on whether they should be formally listed as accused in aiding Mihir Shah's attempt to evade arrest.

Details about the ongoing legal proceedings have emerged. A Mumbai court has recently extended the police custody of Rajesh Shah’s driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, until July 11. Bidawat's role in the post-accident scenario is still under scrutiny as authorities piece together the events leading up to and following the tragic incident.

The effort to apprehend Mihir Shah involved significant police resources, with multiple teams being formed for the task. Shah was eventually located and arrested in an apartment in Virar, approximately 65 kilometers from Mumbai, and was subsequently taken to Worli Police Station. It has been reported that "Mihir Shah was allegedly driving the BMW - after spending ₹18,730 at a Juhu bar, where he partied for hours with four friends - when it rammed into the two-wheeler at 5.30 am on Sunday."

Adding to the complexity of the case, the bar where Shah and his friends had been shortly before the accident, named 'Vice - Global Tapas', was sealed following his arrest. This action suggests a thorough investigation into all possible aspects and locations involved in the case.

Amidst these developments, Former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has raised concerns about the timing of Shah’s arrest. He highlighted the critical importance of timely blood sample collection to determine intoxication levels, stating, "A blood sample needs to be taken within 5-6 hours to determine if the driver was intoxicated." Deshmukh suggested that there might have been attempts to delay the arrest to prevent a blood test, which could be crucial in establishing Shah's condition at the time of the accident.

Woman Dragged For 2 Kilometres in Mumbai Hit-and-Run Tragedy

In a deeply distressing turn of events surrounding the Mumbai hit-and-run case, new details have come to light about the circumstances leading up to the death of Kaveri Nakhwa, a 45-year-old woman. Kaveri and her husband Pradip were returning home on their scooter after purchasing wholesale fish at Crawford Market when their lives were irrevocably changed. The collision occurred on Dr Annie Besant Road, where both Kaveri and Pradip ended up on the BMW's bonnet, which then sped away with them still on it. Pradip, despite his injuries, desperately searched for his wife but was unable to find her. Tragically, Kaveri was later found near the Worli end of the sea link, approximately 2 kilometers from where the accident took place. She was declared dead at Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central.

The vehicle involved was registered under the name of Mihir's father, Rajesh Shah, a Shiv Sena representative from Palghar, affiliated with the faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In response to the incident, Chief Minister Shinde has assured the public that all individuals involved in this hit-and-run will face the full consequences of the law, emphasizing that "the law would be applied equally to everyone, regardless of their status or political connections."

Further investigation into this tragic incident has revealed harrowing details captured on CCTV footage. This footage indicates that Ms. Nakhwa was dragged for approximately 2 kilometers after the initial collision before the BMW finally came to a stop. What followed next was even more appalling: the police reported that after stopping, Shah and the driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, exchanged seats. Bidawat then removed Kaveri's body from under the car and left it on the road. In a horrific act of cruelty, the driver then reportedly reversed the vehicle to run over her body once more before speeding away, disappearing from the CCTV's field of view.

This grim sequence of events has led to intense scrutiny of Bidawat's role in the aftermath of the accident. The police have informed the court, which is questioning the charge of culpable homicide against the driver, that Bidawat was "aware of his actions and helped the other accused" in trying to cover up the incident.

"No One Will Have Immunity": Chief Minister Declares Tough Stance on Justice

In a recent statement that has resonated widely across Maharashtra, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed serious concern over the increasing number of hit-and-run incidents in the state. Addressing the public and the media, Chief Minister Shinde voiced his alarm about the trend and pointed out a disturbing pattern where the powerful and influential often attempt to misuse their status to manipulate the legal system. In his declaration, he made it clear that such abuses of power would not be tolerated under his governance, emphasizing that no acts of injustice would go unchecked.

Chief Minister Shinde went further to assure the citizens of Maharashtra that no one would be above the law, regardless of their social or political standing. He stated firmly, "No one, whether rich, influential, or the offspring of bureaucrats or ministers, affiliated with any party, will have immunity as long as I am the Chief Minister of the State. I have zero tolerance for injustice," a statement he made in a post on X, a social media platform.
