Another mass shooting incident in USA amidst a rapid rise in gun violence: 3 killed and 2 injured in firing near University of Cincinnati campus

On Monday (1st July), the United States of America witnessed yet another mass shooting incident. This time, the tragic event resulted in three fatalities and two injuries. The shooting occurred near the University of Cincinnati campus during the early hours of the day. Following the incident, authorities swiftly responded, taking two suspects into custody, one of whom was among the injured. Currently, the identities and the motive behind the attack remain unclear. All victims involved in the unfortunate incident were male, according to reports from local media sources.

In a communication with The Associated Press, Cincinnati police Captain Mark Burns revealed details about the investigation's progress. "There were multiple firearms recovered at the crime scene and two subjects (one of which was also shot) are being detained at this time," Captain Burns explained. He confirmed that no additional information could be provided at the moment.

The University of Cincinnati's public safety department was prompt in alerting the community about the unfolding situation. Through posts on X (formerly Twitter), they initially advised the public of an ongoing emergency response by police shortly before 3 a.m. The posts were soon updated to clarify that it was a shooting incident, with the safety notice advising individuals to "Be observant/take action as needed."

An hour after the initial alert, the public safety department issued an "all clear" message. Despite this, they assured that a "police will maintain heavy presence" in the area to ensure community safety and to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

Local news outlets reported that patrol officers in the vicinity heard the sound of gunfire and were quick to respond. Upon arrival, they discovered several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds, highlighting the swift and chaotic nature of the incident.

Rampant incidences of mass shooting in the United States

Gun violence, including the dire issue of mass shootings, continues to be a tragic and familiar reality in American cities, an unsettling trend that persisted into the first weekend of summer. Notable incidents over this period left numerous individuals dead or wounded, affecting a variety of locations including a party in Alabama, an entertainment district in Ohio, and a grocery store in Arkansas.

The news agency Associated Press reported that this last weekend marked the second consecutive weekend witnessing a surge in mass shootings across the U.S., prompting urgent appeals from mayors for intervention and support.

In Alabama, a particularly severe incident occurred early Sunday (23rd June) during a crowded party in Montgomery where a horrifying amount of gunfire was unleashed. "Hundreds of rounds were fired, and at least 13 people were injured," stated the local police.

Montgomery's Interim Police Chief John Hall provided additional details on the investigation's findings. "Investigators recovered more than 350 different spent shell casings," he noted, highlighting the scale of the violence.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed expressed his profound distress over the events. "This senseless violence just has to stop," he declared, calling it a "blessing that no one died" and urging for more effective measures to prevent criminals from accessing firearms.

Similarly, another outbreak of gun violence shook Columbus, Ohio, early Sunday (23rd June). This incident occurred near the main street of a well-known restaurant and entertainment district close to downtown, resulting in at least ten people being injured, one critically.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther voiced his frustration and concern regarding the continued violence. "The gun violence is outrageous, it’s unacceptable, and it must stop," he stated, reflecting a growing desperation for solutions amidst these repeating tragedies.

Earlier on Friday (28th June), a Nebraska man opened an indiscriminate fire on seven people all of whom are believed to be Hispanic. The injured included four children. Police said that the accused had earlier told the victims to “go back to where they came from” and to “speak English”. He later fatally shot himself.

The Nebraska State Patrol revealed further details about the tragic event, stating that 74-year-old Billy Booth executed the attack from within his home in Crete. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. on Friday, ending with Booth turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.

Jillian Snider, a lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, offered insights into a possible reason behind the increasing frequency of mass shootings involving multiple victims. "One reason for so many shootings with multiple victims is the increased use of modified guns that can spray hundreds of shots," Snider explained. She added, “That’s why you’re seeing more victims that are not even involved in the initial confrontation,” highlighting the broader danger these modifications pose.

The Gun Violence Archive provided a grim statistic that underscores the severity of the situation. As of Sunday (23rd June), the total number of mass shootings in the US for the year had reached more than 240, averaging more than one mass shooting per day. This data paints a stark picture of the ongoing challenge that gun violence presents to communities across the nation.

4th of July mass shootings increased over the past 3 years, group says

Mass shootings have become increasingly common during a holiday that is typically celebrated with fireworks and barbecues. This observation comes from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a nonprofit organization that diligently tracks shooting incidents across the United States.

Mark Bryant, the executive director of the GVA, provided specific figures to illustrate this disturbing trend. "There were 80 total mass shootings over the past three years between July 1-7," he reported. The organization defines a "mass shooting" as an event where four or more people are killed or injured, not including the shooter.

Breaking down the numbers annually, Bryant detailed, "There were 25 mass shootings over the July 4th week in 2021, 27 during that week in 2022, and 28 in 2023." This incremental increase highlights a growing concern over public safety during national celebrations.

Specific incidents exemplify the severity of the situation. In Hayward, California, on July 4, 2023, what began as a confrontation between two groups during 4th of July festivities escalated dramatically. "Shots rang out and the shooting left six victims injured," reported the local police. Fortunately, all victims were eventually released from the hospital.

Further intensifying concerns, another tragic event occurred a day later in the nation’s capital. "A drive-by shooting in the city's Northeast quadrant left nine people injured, including two children," according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

"What happens around the fourth is you have more gatherings, you have more heat, you have more agitate, and this is the big one, and I think this is what's going to keep causing the numbers to go up, you have anger and proximity to weapons," Bryant told ABC News.

Steve Casstevens, former chief of police in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and past president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), echoed similar concerns in his comments to ABC News about the recurring increase in shootings during the Fourth of July celebrations. "It happens every year," he stated.

Casstevens explained the dual scenarios that typically contribute to such incidents. "On one side of it when you look at whether it's family gatherings, so that's one thing, you're mixing that heat of July 4 weekend typically, and alcohol and sometimes a gathering of people who dislike each other. And then guns come out," he noted. He also pointed out the risks associated with large public events: "The other style is the mass gatherings of parades and parties so you've got situations like the Highland Park shooting couple of years ago, you've got a mass gathering of people. So many of these mass shootings over the years, the perpetrators are looking for an opportunity for mass gatherings."

Furthermore, Casstevens highlighted the importance of vigilance and communication with law enforcement during such events. "During the large public gatherings, whether it's parades and festivals and stuff like that. It's just so easy for people to become complacent," he observed. Casstevens advised the public to be alert to unusual behavior, emphasizing, "Just be aware. When you're walking around and it's 97 degrees out and some guys walking beside you with a long leather jacket, well, that's what we call an indicator, that's abnormal."

In those mass shooting incidents, like the Highland Park, Illinois, shooting, there are indicators and warning signs that the FBI is trying to be proactive about before something happens, according to the head of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit.

"We know that these offenders that go on to commit these the mass attacks follow, a lot of times a very specific pathway, a very specific trajectory," Dr. Karie Gibson, the unit chief of the BAU, explained to ABC News. Her insights reveal a pattern that, if identified early, could potentially prevent future tragedies.

In an effort to educate the public and improve preventative measures, the FBI launched a new website in May designed to help prevent mass shootings. This resource aims to raise awareness of indicators that someone might be on the path to committing violence. These indicators include concerning jokes or comments, an expressed interest in previous mass shootings, and troubling interactions with others.

Dr. Gibson emphasized the crucial role of community involvement in preventing these violent acts before they occur. "There has to be involvement before somebody has broken the law or before a crime has been committed. And so with this campaign, it's really highlighting the importance of the bystanders and how important it is for them to come forward, the significant role that they have," she stated. This approach encourages the public to play an active role in safety and prevention.

The FBI advocates for people to contact their local field office when they notice such warning signs. Gibson highlighted a lesser-known aspect of law enforcement’s capabilities: "Many people don't realize that law enforcement has a proactive prevention arm to deal with individuals that are on that pathway to violence, to deal with mitigating this targeted violence that we face." This statement underscores the FBI's commitment to not just react to, but actively prevent, potential threats to community safety.
